i care about understanding the differences if i'm trying to make a decision to buy one set or another. if you don't really care to know about what you're getting, then no worries.

that's why i have not signed up for any pre-orders as of yet. i've only seen the JDM in operation in videos. i have not seen videos of the USDM TOM's in operation, nor the helix copies with the clear lenses.

I think the amber turns and the non-lit side reflectors look better, IMHO.

Actually it is a requirement to have 2 red side marker lights mounted one on each side as far to the rear as practicable. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regul...=r49CFR571.108 (table I)

I missed that, good catch.

So if we had a steady light on the side, it'd be all compliant aside from being approved officially.

No, in order to be compliant the manufacturer must certify with the USDOT that its product meets the applicable SAE standards and place the number the USDOT gives them on the lens in the correct manner.

The USDOT does not actually approve anything. The DOT number is basically just a file identification number referencing the manufacturers assertion it's product meets the applicable standards.

BTW technically non USDOT numbered lights are not legal for sale for road going vehicles in the US.

Right, that's what I meant when I said "it'd be all compliant aside from being approved officially"

Having all the necessary functionality by itself does not make it legally in compliance as it still needs to be vetted by the certification process. What I meant was outside of not having the lit side rear marker, there's no other functionality missing that would cause it to fail certification.

That said, unless DEPO itself seeks certification, the JDM lights would be illegal for road use in the US regardless of completeness of functionality.

I am going to look at mine again, I remember seeing some light bleed through on the side markers.

@468Power

Can you confirm that your TOM's Tails are coming with the following:

1) Correct wiring for USDM
2) Lighting in the side reflector
3) Amber turn signals

These are the TOM'S JDM Tail Lights imported by TOM'S USA for USDM Vehicles with full USA Warranty, so...
1 - Yes they are correct wiring for US vehicles
2 & 3 - All red lense throughout. All blinks amber/yellowish.
Plus included proper replacement relay.

Cheers!

I want a set with amber turn signals. At the beginning of this thread, the JDM versions were shipping with amber turn signals. At what point did that change? And how do I get a set of those?

Sorry Andrew - you are correct. The JDM versions are all red lense but blinks amber/yellow for the turn signals. I have confirmed with one of our local customers who has had them installed.
