Like I said in my earlier post, every vehicle I've owned for at least the past decade has always done this.

I could have driven it all day long, it could be 110* outside, the engine could be boiling hot, and it'll idle at above 1000 RPM at start-up for at least a little bit before dropping. Unless it's doing it in the middle of a warmed-up drive cycle (i.e. you're stopped at a red light after 15 minutes and it's still high), you're fine.

If I were totally guessing, I would guess it has something to do with an ECU check and the emissions systems in modern vehicles. They certainly seem far more likely to exhibit this behavior than cars in the past, which would drop idle almost immediately.

Besides warming up the engine, another purpose of a fast idle is to warm up the catalytic converter. Furthermore, if you tend to drive aggressively before the engine is fully warmed up, the ECM will attempt to warm the engine more quickly than normal.

@OP: I suggest you start the car from overnight cold and time how long it takes for the idle to drop to normal levels -- around 700 RPM.

This looked perfectly normal to me. Now when you stop at a light. What happens? Does it sit there?
