I've also read that Sport mode increases throttle (pedal) response, and that Snow mode starts the transmission in 2nd to avoid slippage in low gear.

I don't have my FR-S yet, but I suspect Sport mode works exactly like the ECT PWR (Electronic Controlled Transmission Power) on my IS300 which I drive with on at all times. This button was also equipped on the IS250/350.

A similar thread can be seen asking same question in the 06-13 IS. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-s...ntinuosly.html

One member stated a few Toyota Technical Masters told him to "you SHOULD use it in PWR mode ALWAYS. It'll make your transmission last longer. It firms up the shifts, and generates less heat. less heat = more tranny life"
- Not sure about the credibility of above sentence, maybe someone else can chime in

I guess another way of putting it would be:

Normal mode = fuel economy as first priority (w/c doesn't make sense for a sports car)
Sport mode = the original intention/design of the engineers (i.e. the real normal mode)

Perhaps because no clutch and all shifts are perfect...

Reading this thread leaves me with a couple of questions...

1.) So in terms of fuel economy, cruising at 6th gear in manual mode actually saves gas when compared to normal Drive?

2.) When the sport button is on, do manual mode downshifts change in nature?

3.) What is snow mode, does it actually change the ride quality or dull the car's shifts?

4.) If snow button is activated on manual mode, and the gear starts at 2, wouldn't that be more efficient in terms of power and gas if you were driving on manual?

5.) What's faster from 0-60mph, D on sport mode, or the normal 1st - 2nd - 3rd gear shift to redline?

This is my first auto w/ manual mode :s

You bring up a valid point. I chose an AT because I have a 50 mile round-trip commute to work everyday. Sometimes I'd like to just not worry about it if there is traffic, and the added bonus of the fuel economy difference was hard to pass up. But when I feel like I want to drive racecar and burn a little fuel, I have that option as well.

I'm comming from a Mini Cooper S with a similar auto transmission to the BRZ/FRS. I don't believe i've seen it mentioned here, but some Mini owners chose to re-wire their sport buttons to essentially hardwire it into a sport mode button press.

I wonder how complicated it would be the switch the BRZ button such that it defaults to "On" and then you need to press the button to disable sport mode. If the ECU is involved then it may be something a tuner can modify.

Anyone have a circuit diagram for the button by chance?

1) Cruising in sixth will save mileage if you're cognicent of not lugging up steep hills, etc.
3) Snow mode doesn't change ride quality. In snow mode the car will start in second gear, and the throttle response is less aggressive (pedal feels "slushy" so as to not upset the rear tires. Don't know if this is via actual TPS % alteration or through ignition advance). I think the upshifts feel smoother/softer too.
5) On mine sport mode in D is notably faster for dragracing. Upshifts are quicker and perfect redline shifts each time. I always seem to have a slight hesitation on upshifts in manual mode comparatively, but this could just be me.

In regards to the sport button... I've seen pictures of people running a small box on the firewall wired in that disables traction/VSC. I've never seen data though on a DIY. Would be awesome to have sport mode on and TC/VSC off right out of the gate.
