Need to bleed my brakes - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Rented a car last week.
Brakes were TIGHT.
Realized my BRZ has a soft pedal.

Also, I don't want to deal with a sheared lug stud,
like the last time I removed a wheel.

I need to remove the wheels to bleed, right ?

I've done it on cars through the wheel or a classic reach around. You may be able to on the BRZ but I'm sure you would have to jack it up or train a 5 year old.

But really, just remove the wheels. The lugs are not made of chocolate.

First off, it's really not fair to compare the brake feel on two different cars.

Now tell me that you did check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir?

You don't have to remove the wheels, but it makes it easier.

You might consider using the "humfrz" method of bleeding the brakes:

Drive your car up to your local brake shop. Ask them to bleed the brakes. Have a cup of coffee and read a car magazine. Pay them $35. Drive home, Take a nap.

I take my cars to the shop for certain repairs I don't want to deal with.
But, I don't mind bleeding the brakes when I have time.
Only thing stopping me is a stripped lug stud and then dealing with a half day repair.

Well, it seems like your call then.

If you use one of these, the lug nuts should come off without twisting off the studs.

Learn a better elbow torque or buy a torque wrench. Your studs should not be striping out from removing you wheels.

You'll need a helper to bleed the brakes, or a power bleeder, or speed bleeders.

Get a helper first, best if it is someone who is familiar with the brake bleeding process, then remove all the wheels and get the car on jack stands. Trust me, trying to do it through the wheel or without a helper is not a good idea if this is your first time bleeding brakes.

I've bled brakes many times on all my cars.

The last time I removed a BRZ wheel, the lug nut got stuck using the impact wrench.
Had to use my breaker bar, and it twisted it off, and sheared the lug stud.
I had to install a new lug stud and lug nut.

Sorry if I talked down to you, but, your first post didn't indicate (to me at least), that you had any experience bleeding brakes.

I bled the brakes on the BRZ.

I was worried that the stud would shear again
but all lug nuts came off easily b/c of anti-seize last time.

I did about 10 pumps for the rear,
and 5 pumps for the front.

Brakes seem to be more firm, but still not hard & biting.

I think rotors are scored, and
I think the pads are low, but I can’t even see.

I literally had the wheels off, and I have no clue if the pads are low.
There is no where to see the pad. Totally blocked views.

How are you supposed to see if your pads are low?
