Mixing tires?
One of my rear tires took a nail right on the outer edge of the tread; I took a chance and got it repaired, but it's still leaking ~3 PSI / day. My impulse is to just replace the two rear tires with stock Michelin Primacy HPs, but the ~$200 / tire price tag has me wincing. I've seen a lot of other, cheaper tires recommended on here, but I've also seen a lot of advice not to mix and match tires unless they're very similar.
How similar do tires need to be in order to play nice together? Is there any particular model which would do well in the back with Primacy HPs in the front? Another option is to switch out all four tires. I've seen the Sumitomo HTR ZIII recommended; at ~$80 / tire, I could get four of those cheaper than two HPs. But I'm a tire noob, and don't know what changes in handling to expect with a different set of tires. I mostly use the car as a DD with some spirited driving on weekends. Any suggestions? |

God dude take it from me, if you can do it, and the tires are all worn, just replace all 4. Its a pain in the ass to buy two then buy two then buy two. Your tread never wears the same and its tough to rotate them. But if you have good tire tread left, just replace the tire.
I wana shoot for replacing tires and rims when I get to that point |

The general advice is to replace both tires on the same axle at the same time.
If all the tires are worn, I'd replace them all. If the tires are close to new, I personally would not hesitate to get 2 new ones, even a different brand. Handling changes quite a bit with different tires, and is a matter of personal preferences as well as driving style, surface conditions, weather and temperature. If you end up with two different brands it'd be worth trying the new ones both front and rear, to see what configuration you like best. |

Mixing tires won't provide you the best road performance and handling. Replace all four tires at the same time.

Assuming you're running Primacys in the front, if you decide to switch to a stickier tire in the rear you're going to get understeer. Primacys are expensive tires with not a lot of grip, so I'd recommend moving away from them as quick as possible once all of them wear down. If you decide to swap Primacys into the rear, you can try to look for people who are selling their stock tires (+ wheels) - you'll usually get a pretty good deal. I learned this from my friend who has a stockpile of Primacys as drift spares that he either picked up for close to nothing or free.

Why would you even think about going to the stock tires?
You'll be fine with a different brand tire, as long as they are on the same axle. The only thing you'll notice is more grip on the new tires. That's all. Those Sumitomo HTR ZIII are ok for daily driving. I would get all 4 instead of the two.
