Tuning option questions

Hey guys,

So I've got some UEL Gruppe-S headers that I plan on installing this weekend. Which will no doubt throw a CEL.

I'm based in New Zealand and run 98Ron fuel (93octane I think).

I'm trying to work out my options for tuning. I could get a OFT and hopefully there is a stage2 tune for 98Ron available.

But I plan on supercharging eventually - and want to use my local dyno tuner. But they aren't interested in OFT and want me to use Ecutek which comes with a license cost of NZ$1092.50 (US$716.29) which seems expensive. And that is just for the license..

So I'm not sure what to do. Do you have to purchase EcuTek licenses from tuners? So they can charge what they want?

That is expensive. I think ECUtek licenses are around £150-£180. Most tuners include the license cost in the first tune. Are you sure it doesn't include the programming kit?

No they are is a one-off license cost apparently. He says it's to cover them having to buy the tuning module and cable.. but they only have to buy those things once.. looks like they're making a good premium on the EcuTek licenses..

If they're dodgy like that, don't even consider them. Plenty of tuners around.
OFT has good resale value, so when you sell it you'll be hardly out of pocket.
I can send you a tune for OFT on 98 for those exact headers.

Would it be ok to assume that a tune for Aussie 98Ron would be just as good for NZ?

The only problem is sometimes I can't even get 98.. only BP sells 98 at 'select' outlets so if you're going for a trip it's highly likely you'll wind up somewhere which doesn't have it.

I put my Gruppe-S headers on in the weekend. No CEL yet

The ECU will manage how much timing it has to pull just fine.

OP, for what it's worth I have the Gruppe-S headers and an OFT. When I go forced induction, I'll either sell the OFT or perhaps keep it just for data-logging purposes.

I'm running the OFT Stage 2 UEL 93 Octane map currently with some of the tune tweaks as suggested by @Wayno and @steve99. No complaints. Logs look good and it certainly feels peppier.
