Trunk opens randomly?
Hey all! I've done a search but can't seem to find any other threads on my problem. The trunk on my 2013 (purchased in August 2012) FR-S has started opening at random times. I first noticed it a few days ago when I was leaving a gas station. As I was leaving, I noticed that my trunk light was on so I pulled over and shut the trunk. I assumed I had pressed it accidentally. I noticed it the next day as I was leaving a friend's house, and again later that day as I was driving home. It popped on while I was driving! I pulled over and checked, and sure enough my trunk was open again. As I was leaving work this morning it popped open again.
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? I did check to make sure nothing was caught on the trunk release latch, but I think I may empty my trunk completely just to be totally sure nothing is somehow snagging it. |

try locking it from the button in the trunk and see if it happens again. I don't have any other ideas except wonky/stuck key fob button.

Is the button getting pressed while in your pocket? I've had that happen a couple times when wearing tighter pants.

Are you not hearing the latch pop open? When i use the key fob or the button in the car, it is a very noticeable *chunk* noise when it opens. Third option is that someone has been putting tiny invisible people in your trunk, and they keep trying to escape. |

It could be that the latch is getting stuck. If none of the above works for you, try spraying the latch with some WD-40.
I had something similar happen with the hood on my '02 Impreza. |

I had a bowling bag in my trunk that snagged the emergency release handle as it rolled over a couple of times and popped open the trunk. Got anything like that rolling around back there?

Seconded, had a laundry basket catch it and pull the emergency handle from inside during a freeway off-ramp.

I had this happen while I had stuff in my trunk. I went around a corner too fast and as usual I heard a thud. When I got to where I was going I noticed the door open light was on. Turns out my stuff slammed into that lock button thing in the trunk and it opened somehow? Either that or the strap from my bag wrapped around the emergency release strap on the latch and it opened it as a turned and slid and hit the lock button on the wall! anyways I wish there was a cargo net or something that came with the car. I keep beating up my trunk by corning to hard.. I guess I need to start practicing with the water cup in my cup holder

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I've tried resetting the trunk release button and removing my (large) autocross box from the trunk, and I haven't noticed it in the last couple of days. However, I've only had to drive a short distance to work these last few days, so I hope that one of those was it and it doesn't come back. Thanks for all of the tips!

The trunk liner that Subaru makes does a good job of keeping stuff from sliding around.
