Accidentally blew the dash speakers
Welp, haven't even owned the car for a week and I messed up with the volume control. I thought it was a quiet song so I turned up the volume. Then I figured out I had the audio off so I turned it on, and blam, super loud.
Now, the sound sounds normal except for a constant quieter crackling sound from the front speakers. I can't tell if it's from the tweeters or the main speakers. How do I tell which speakers are busted and what's the best way to fix this? I figure it's a good time to upgrade the speakers a bit as it'll be cheaper than OEM and better performing. I saw the other thread on speaker sizing but I don't know much about speakers except swapping out door component speakers on cheaper cars I've owned. Any recommendations? e: or does the crackling indicate a different problem? Is there a way to fine tune the fade on the Nav so that I can test the speakers better? You could try a song with varying levels of bass. There are also probably audio test CD's you can download to check it with. I know when I was working at the dealer we had a factory audio test CD to specifically check for things like that.
You could also try taking it to a dealer. They don't need to know what caused it. Just tell them your hearing distortion from the speakers. |

yea, go back to the dealer and have it fixed.
BTW, i have had my ipod connected and have turned it up to full MAX and it should decent and nothing popped - it probably popped or blew because of the static or distortion... or maybe u were playing the radio.. take it to the dealer and i am sure they will do it for FREE.

if the speakers can't handle max volume, there shouldnt be max volume. its a warranty issue, take it back to the dealer.

The crackling is gone this morning but I can't tell if that means that the tweeters are just not making noise at all or what. The overall sound in the car is a bit bass heavy but I don't remember if it was that way before or not.
e: i'm gonna take it in sometime next week to have them check out the speakers and also see if they can't diagnose the problem where the nav system can't find GPS intermittently. |

Is there an equalizer setting? If so you should be able to figure out which components were impacted by adjusting the various frequencies as well as the fade and balance.

Are you playing music through an iPod or other MP3 player? It could be an issue with your USB connection then. Mine had the exact same problem, so I unplugged my iPod and then reattached it and the speakers were back to normal.

Factory speakers are 99% of the time garbage, and made of paper. I can't think of a single stock vehicle anyone in my family has owned without blowing one or more paper factory speakers over the course of a few years using the factory head unit.
It's just the way it is. As long as the car in under warranty though, keep replacing them. |

You didnt do anything wrong... Mine did that off the lot... Going to have them check it on thursday... The crackle is coming from the dash speakers. Does it more frequently when streaming from bluetooth.

Turn on the radio, (With the sound turned down) Then go to speaker level adjustment and test each corner for sound.
Did it smell funny in the car after you did that? |

This argument makes no sense, as a stereo with no 'maximum' (by definition meaning "the most") then it would be able to surpass that of the factory speakers and blow them much easier. if by what you mean is 'there should be a volume limiter' then, well, that is up to the user to decide how much distortion they are willing to tolerate in a trade off for more volume. if youre knowingly pushing the speakers beyond their power limit you cant expect them to last forever. maybe its because im a musician but if there is a problem that involves no sound, the first thing I do is lower the volume to zero before checking cable connections to avoid any crackling or buzzing at full volume. its not only uncomfortable to hear but also really bad for your equipment. |
