Exhaust Issues
Ok, here is my issue. I currently have a setup of this: Stock header(Gutted out the Cat) and 2.5 straight pipe from the header back. I recently got a eviction notice because my car is too loud on startup and just loud in general while driving. I was wondering what kind of setup I could do to get the aggressive subaru throaty sound, but also keep it reasonable on the obnoxious level.

Back on track, it all depends on how much you're trying to quiet it down. Pretty much any exhaust on the market (except maybe a Tomei 80R) will be quieter than what you have by a fair amount. If you want the rumble, you need UEL. If you're happy with how it sounds now but want to keep it less obnoxious just add whatever cat-back fits your volume requirements. There's a few threads that rank the available exhausts in order of loudness, just base it off that. Keep in mind that it'll be really loud on cold starts regardless, mine with a stock header (and stock cat in place), catted perrin front pipe and 2.5" resonated cat-back is obnoxious when it's first fired up in the winter.

Wow how in the F did you not know this would cause problems?
You need a minimum of a catted header and front pipe plus a huge resonator just to make it tolerable. Put a damn muffler on the car why the F did you take it off? Unless your car is for racing at the track only it should always have a muffler on it. There are plenty of mufflers out there that give you good aggressive sound without the douchebag rapsy obnoxious no muffler sound.

Lots of tracks have sound limits that a straight piped car wouldn't have a chance of passing, even a pure race car doesn't need to be that obnoxious.

No need to be rude bro, I had no knowledge of exhaust systems and found out with what I did I actually lost power. Now I have no back pressure and sometimes my car bogs. So what I am wondering now, since I did delete everything (Resonator,Cats and all) will I need to purchase a up pipe/mid pipe also, or would a cat back be sufficient? Below is a pic of my exhaust as is now.

Well that is welded the entire way back from the front pipe.
You are going to either need to weld a muffler in there or toss what you have and get an entire new catback. You could get a resonated Perrin catback which will quite things down pretty well. The Perrin resonator is huge. |

Personally since you already gutted your stock header I dont feel like you will get enough benefit of the cost in buying a new header.
TBH most of the gains you get from aftermarket headers are from the lack of a catalytic converter. I did say MOST because there is some benefit to longer and larger runners and also the collector but not nearly enough to justify the cost. Removing the cat removes 90%+ of the flow restriction. Dont know much about iNvidia exhaust other than people who buy it are happy. As for front pipe did you gut its cat too? If so buy an aftermarket one with a high flow. If not then its your choice on buying an aftermarket one but know that if you do the noise might increase due to a higher flowing cat. |

I'm not sure about the front pipe cat being gutted.. I will have to contact the exhaust shop that did it...I told them at the time I wanted no restrictions...so it's a high possibility. I appreciate you being informative now man...it helps a guy like me that knows nothing about how exhaust systems work. Also does the muffler give the back pressure I need to stop the bogging of the throttle every soo often?
