Automatic Trans Shift During Restrictor

Has anyone experienced shifting an automatic in manual mode as the restrictor kicks in? Basically missing your shift a hair late? I wouldn't imagine it's healthy so don't do it but the car kicks forward acting like it's a much bigger machine than it really is.

This is how I feel when it happens to me: SKIP TO 4:40

**So to better explain. Going full throttle you hit the rev limiter and as soon as the RPMs start going back down, you shift. So like I said before, you basically missed your shift, hit the rev limiter and shifted in the short time the RPMs are on their way down. I'm not saying I do this, I just accidentally missed my shift by a hair a couple times and noticed this. Again, this is probably not healthy for your car but when second gear kicks in it feels kinda cool. Kinda like the vide I posted.

I have felt this before, I worked at a car dealer and the 14 yr models never did this but for some reason on certain 15 yr models autos would hesitate to do so in manual mode, this happened to some Scions but not sure why it happened

If by "restrictor" you mean doodad that prevents over-rev on downshift, why would that not be healthy? It did it's job.

ETA: Send details of engine work if your FR-S feels like that Lambo.

You mean the car slows down a lot before it downshifts?

I think he means hitting the rev limiter before shifting, do you hit the limiter and the revs drop, then you shift, and I'm sure the transmission is pissed off due to the limiter and bangs it into the next gear?

I think many cars do that as the load on the engine is reduced during a rev limit event and the transmission may shift less than smoothly.

could be completely wrong. I don't really understand what he is trying to say

Totally.

I'd be running 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds if it wasn't for that d@mn restrictor. :-/

I like. OP hits the limiter and then shifts. Note to self: Do not buy used car from OP.

ETA: Damn, American Top Gear sucks.

It sounds like you are bouncing off the rev limiter. It definitely isn't gentle when it kicks in while you are at full throttle.

Perhaps I am mis-interpreting what you are describing. Do you have a video?

I drive everywhere at the restrictor! I put it in drive and can't go very fast at all and this little light comes on! Must be because Toyota screwed up and didn't put paddles on mine. They did give me a handy foot rest for my left foot though.

I'm still trying to figure out what he's talking about. Has to be the rev limiter. OP knows he's going to be moving slower than the other guy who is not on the rev limiter, right?
