Dealership issue

So I took my car in to get the downshift from 6th to 5th gear grind looked at. The dealership kept it overnight and Then called me to say they couldn't replicate the problem. Anyone else had the same issues? And if so, how did you go about getting the problem fixed?
Thanks

Replicate the issue with them in the car aka show them, or sit in the passenger side and tell them how to do it. Otherwise they can't fix something that isn't there. How are you downshifting from 6th to 5th for it to grind? Is this your first manual transmission car?

No. I've been driving a manual since I was 16. I downshift when goin 70+ to pass and it grinds into gear. Other people have had the issue. It's not a driver error.

Not driver error, but you should be rev matching downshifts. Doesn't matter if you were driving manual since 16, how old are you now? 18? lol
You have to help them replicate the problem. Otherwise it doesn't exist.

I have the same issue, my tech replicated it but Toyota said they would not cover it until he could replicate it at the speed limit. Right now in order to get a good loud grind you have to downshift from 6th to 5th at about 85 MPH. Needles to say I will be downshifting a lot more often at highway speeds until the castle nuts are so fucked it does it at lower speeds. Every morning when I go to work traffic flows at about 90 MPH on I-95 so it's really annoying to not have this crap fixed (texh said it would require a new transmission).

**Disclaimer: I rev match all downshifts, it still grinds. It's synchro related so the only way to avoid it is to double clutch it, which is ridiculous. Any other gear on this car will happily downshift to 6k RPM and above, only 5th is borked.

Please clarify;

You are in 6th gear at 6K rpm and you downshift to 5th gear?

No, Im traveling at 85-90 mph whatever RPM that may be in 6th gear and upon attempting to shift down to 5th regardless of a perfect rev match you can feel a nasty grind while engaging 5th through the shifter. Sometimes it is audible, like an old tranny's crunch, other times you just feel the crunch.

The 6000rpm comment was that on any other downshift, be it 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd there is no grind at all regardless of rev matching to 6k and higher, which is why I told my tech to suck it when he told me the issue was happening because the transmission wasnt meant to downshift at a high rpm (sure, if I was driving a volvo...), and because of that he took it out and against dealer rules he broke the speed limit and agreed something was fucked up when he tested it. He reported his finding to Toyota with my comment that above 80 mph the grind always happened and they told em to come back when it happened at the speed limit (Its bullshit since our warranty isnt based on legal speed limits. I still have plenty of warranty left though so I wont bother fighting it for now)

I'm going to go back next week and if they won't fix the issue or say nothing is wrong I'm going to try another dealer.
I haven't tried that yet. Might be worth a shot though.
Thanks.

Get everything in writing. EVERYTHING, test drives, description of problem, what "toyota" supposedly said. Telling you stuff means nothing if you don't have it in writing. Otherwise "it never happened". Just because their tech isn't allowed to break the law/aka the speed limit, that doesn't mean the car is not warrantied at over the speed limit.

I need to go in and demonstrate my transmission BS to a dealer too.. I have just been putting it off because I hate fighting with them. I might do that for my 30K service this week. I already need them to do the TSB for my taillights and my windows freezing. Might as well tackle this too.

OP I have found my transmission with do this 4-5-6 if I am above 5kprm and shifting quickly. It does not matter if going up or down.

The way I keep it from happening is to not shift so quickly.

What do I mean?

I mean when I press in clutch wait 1/2 second before trying to change gears. This gives the syncros a little time to catch up.
It works every time.
If I go back to trying to change gears with no wait (as soon as I press the clutch) then it will grind a little every time.
