Changed Air Filter caused check engine light

I just installed a new k&n high performance air filter and the check engine light came on. Not sure if this caused it, what do you think? How to fix?

You need to get the code read for us to know what might be going on, but my guess is it's a P0172. Make sure you got the filter box sealed back together tightly. Also, is the K&N brand new? You didn't add any more oil to it, did you? They are pre-oiled in the box.

I unpackaged the K&N and installed it, no extra oil or anything. There is a square corner that I assumed should be pointed down and to the left. It would not seal right the other way. Making sure the box is sealed is hard since the bottom just has guides to close it. No clamps. Any other tips? thanks for the reply.

Do you know the specific part number for the filter you bought?

My check engine goes on sometimes after cleaning the air filter. It goes away after a few hours.

Take your car by AutoZone or someplace like that. They'll usually read the code and reset it for free. Come back and let us know what it was. Until we know that, we'd just be guessing.

Same thing happened when I swapped my whole intake.

The ECU is seeing MAF values out of line with your recent history. It doesn't know if you swapped filters or if your whole intake is tumbling down the road behind the car.

Unhook your battery for a few min and it should reset the MAF history and kill the CEL. Of course it might be equivalent to just driving on it for a few days. And your fuel economy will be a little rough during the recalibration phase.

So after 5 cycles of starting the car the CEL turned off automatically. Thanks for the discussion everyone.
