pulley not spinning and then spins loud noise

So i am noticing a pulley is making noise and it spins and the stops spinning. The back end is always spinning but the front end starts and then stops rotation, is this normal? When it initiates rotation it makes a loud noise like a loud click. I never noticed this before is this normal? Below is a photo of the part.

LOL. That is your AC compressor.

It's normal.

Not sure if trolling though.

The AC compressor has an electric clutch that can start or stop the compressor based on whether or not it is needed at that time.

It's normal.

Geez guys not everyone knows what's going on under the hood...

But yeah that AC pulley clicks on and off to activate the AC compressor. If your AC is turned off, it shouldn't activate at all.

Even still -- Razz him for not using the search button or something, great. But for fucks sake remember there was a time when you guys had no clue what was going on unders the hood of a car too. Maybe this person is really new to this who "Car Hobbiest" thing and just needs to be shown the proper channels on how to do things.

No one should be laughed at because they don't know much about a topic. I can't cook to save my life. Just never really spent time in the kitchen. You think I wouldn't ask a room full of chefs to show me something?

Do you have your defrost on for the windshield? It uses A/C and the heat to defog your window.

Times have definitely changed.
When I was young (and there was no internet) we were far more patient about waiting for answers.
Then if you didnt know something about how an engine worked you: Physically went and asked someone, went to the libarary (that place where they used to keep books), or called around (landline) to various shops.

Now the very first reaction is to "Consult the all powerful Google".
If that doesnt give us instant gratification, we find a forum and post a quick question THEN we go about doing research and asking various people while waiting to see if the answer pops up on the forum.

I honestly think that the US should have a few "NO TECHNOLOGY" days where ALL technology is shut off so that people have to fend for themselves again.
I think it would make us appreciate the technology we have while teaching us how to operate without it.

I honestly believe that if the power went out in the entire US, that half of the people out there would just wander around in tiny circles mumbling about cell signal & internet service and would probably starve to death or walk off a cliff.

I hear you!!!!!
Now mind you, when we were younger there was a whole lot less under the hood to have to know but when you did want to know there was some work involved.
And... there were good things as well, such as "yes officer my name really is John Smith and I do live at 1234 Main street honest".
