gash in stock tire-question
I have 23,5xx miles on my car now on the stock tires. Today while heading to lunch my boss noticed that my right rear tire has a big gash in it. I am not sure where it came from, but that is beside the point for now. At 23,5xx miles is it worth putting on a replacement of the same tire? i really wanted to get new wheels and tires when these tires wore out but I am not really ready to do that now.
A new primacy HP is going to run me about $210 shipped before install...Any opinions on what I should do? Will putting on 1 new tire with the others at the higher mileage be a bad investment? |

Where is the gash located? Is it on the sidewall or shoulder?
You could "probably" get away with replacing one tire if the other 3 are only slightly worn (meaning 1-2/32nds close to each other) The proper way to do it would be to replace tires in PAIRS. Meaning both sides either the front or the rear (and put new tires on the rear). If the other 3 are at 4/32nds... either put on new wheels and tires now or get a PAIR of tires. If I were you, I would go to a local tireshop and ask if they have a used tire (HP Primacy) that they would sell to you. Or check the forums if someone wants to sell a tire to you. I would highly suggest this first. But make sure the used tire is within the same usage.

I'll bet with all the folks that are swapping their Primacys out for new wheels and better tires on this board, that someone may have a few sitting in their garage. I can't help out as I swapped my Primacys with the dealership for a set of Pilot Super Sports.

The gash is in the sidewall unfortunately, so no repairing it. I am on the local 86 group and there are some folks with spars, but they are all worn for the most part it would seem. I know replacing in pairs is the proper way to go, it just would date to buy $450+ worth of tires when not too much more and I can get better tires and new wheels...

I would see if someone in your area is selling a used one, Im sure you could find one with next to no miles on them. If not, perfect time to upgrade

OP, You're car's totaled. Sell it to me. I can give you a gooooood price.
![]() jk, but if the gash is shallow, it should be fine, right? (I am probably wrong on this...) I got a teeny gash that showed up outta nowhere, but deep enough to sink a penny past Lincoln's head into. The local tire shop guys said as long as it doesn't leak air, it's fine (it doesn't leak, been testing air pressure once a week for ~4 weeks now). I'm at about 2k miles, I should probably hit up the dealership to get a warranty replacement on the tire. How much of a fuss do you guys think the dealership would throw up? (big pics, check out the link below for the pics of the teeny gash) https://www.dropbox.com/sc/6gysg1soc...bf_CGgHv-1ACwa |

Weird. I also have about same mileage as you. I had new rims and tires. Two days ago, when the shop took off the stock tires, my right rear tire also had a big gash in it. Hmmm...
