4 point harness

I've never had or installed a 4 point harness. I'm trying to figure out where the proper place to mount them is. I do not have a cage or harness bar yet so it will be to the floor. So I'd just like some input or ideas of where to mount.

As discussed in another thread you should really have a harness bar. Also be sure that the rules for whatever series you plan to race in allows a 4-point as I have seen many that don't.

I have a roll cage goin in soon. but for now would like to get the harnesses install if i can. and im drifting the car locally so nothing major. just added safety for myself.

It won't be "added safety" if you don't have a cage to go along with the harness.

You're better off just waiting for the cage.

NEVER MOUNT A HARNESS TO THE FLOOR. I included a picture of some of the points where you could mount it properly but in the event of an accident its harmful or even fatal due to the geometry of how the belt will restrict you during impact. Before i had a bar, i mounted mine in the rear seat buckle location and the bolt under the seat.

I don't know of a single sanctioning body (even auto slalom or HDPE) that allows 4/5/6 point belts without a cage. Stock belts let you slump down in the seat in a rollover, 4/5/6 point belts won't let you. Without a cage this means an increased potential for a broken neck.

Another thing to keep in mind is that all the sanctioning bodies up here require equal safety for the passenger, so if you put in a better seat and multi point harness for yourself the passenger seat requires something equivalent if you want a passenger in the car.

I'm not stating this as gospel, of course a roll cage/bar is still the best, but wasn't there some studies done recently that showed the 4+pt rollover/no slump issue was mostly a myth? I can't remember exactly, might have been something to do with the forces involved or something. I think they were saying the fear and paranoia of the roof collapsing directly down on your head was blown out of proportion or something and is actually extremely unlikely. And the anti-submarine concern is alleviated with breakaway straps that extend under impact to allow your upper body to fold forward a bit. I'll search around and see what I can find...

^^ You very well could be right, but it doesn't change the rules for any sanctioning bodies around me. They're pretty clear on it, if you want to run multi point belts the car needs an approved cage.

I'm sure it's partially to clear up any potential grey areas, and make tech inspections easier to manage.
