low end torque question
I'm sure im not the only 1 here asking this question. But what's the best route for low end torque. Torque LOW in the power band like a diesel. FI graphs look like poop torque wise below like 5000rpm for torque yet I hear that's the way to go for more usable torque. Uh, confused. Fuck whp, up top I think stock actually feels pretty good. Below 4500 not so much (duh). Is there a way to add LOW end torque and get the best of both worlds (NA or FI)? Just trying to get unconfused and start a performance path after I get my SP Elite next month. Dyno plots please!!

Stroker kit or very quick spooling turbo. Nothing else is going to make a night/day difference at least nowhere near diesel/more displacement territory.

A twin screw/roots blower. Turbos can be set up to favor the low end as well. Displacement, but that one won't be easy.

A turbo could be set up to help out. Most turbo kits outs there are geared more towards high end power. There is no reason why you couldn't choose a smaller turbo to work when you want it to.
Im a fan of the VW 2.0 turbo engines, they have great low end power for a 4 banger. On the street who cares if it falls off up top, how often are you actually up there.

If your gonna go S/C, A header+Tune is a good place to start IMO. Also consider replacing the overpipe while your in there

Former VW owner here too.
I owned a mk5 r32 with a vr6. Low end torque for days. We got my mom-in-law a newer TDI recently and the low end torque delivery was similar (although it absolutely dies up top). I've seen header + tune combos that get rid of the torque dip early in the rpm range on these cars. Even with the lack of low end torque in this car (in comparison to what I previously drove), it's still a blast. |

what about a tune? Have you seen the dyno Shiv posted for the "nip the dip" thread? it appears that changing the VVT really helped pick up some low end tq. Also, after reviewing a lot of dyno's with after market headers that low end tq dip has been drastically reduced. I would go with headers in a tune 1st.. then, if you really need to go boost you already have a solid setup.
Its not going to compete with something as radical as a turbo/supercharger but its a lot cheaper of an alternative and much more safer for your car.

![]() This is the difference between my stock dyno and after the innovate kit. There's not a ton of difference below 3k, but that's where the curve changes noticeably. It's torquey enough that I have trouble keeping traction on dry pavement if I'm not careful. |
