Automatic transmission failure?

10/17/13 Update: Received BRZ from dealership, cause of failure is still unknown and will likely stay that way. Original trans has been shipped to Subaru of Japan, where it will be analyzed by engies to see what went wrong. The most we can hope for as far as any sort of idea as to what happens if this results in a TSB a few monthes down the road. Most likely I will never know what failed and why. I count my lucky stars I haven't changed any of the drive train yet as my warranty covered the failure; it would be difficult to prove an after market driveshaft of final drive ratio did or did not result in the failure (in my own opinion).

10/9/13 Update
: dealer is shipping the transmission and torque converter to Japan for analysis, that said I will be receiving a new transmission and new torque converter. Supposedly it is being shipped PDQ as it is supposed to arrive to the dealer on Monday or Tuesday according to the service rep.

Original post:
So while I was driving my auto brz today in manual mode, something really weird happened. I was downshifting from 4th to 3rd as I was transitioning to an off ramp on the highway and instead of the tach jumping to the new rpm it did a slow climb to redline (the engine was reving normally), it was like the dance it does when you turn the car on but at half speed. Then instinctually i shifted it back to 4th and it did a slow descent to idle rpm (on the tach, not the engine). Then the real "fun" began.... At a dead stop in first, the car would not do anything until the accelerator pedal was depressed about half and then it did a hard launch at roughly 4-5k rpm, squeeling the tires and the whole nine yards. Again, instincts kick in and i hit the brakes so as to not rear end the car ahead of me. Then I am stuck turning left in oncoming traffic because the car will not accelerate until I have the gas down at least half way. Then I pull in to the nearest parking lot I can find... and discover that reverse does not function AT ALL. Putting the car in reverse is exactly like putting the car in neutral. I am having the car towed in the morning to the dealer and see what happens. After the CEL/SL issue, I am hoping they are willing to give me a new car.

That all said, does the community have any input? The only after market stuff that is not cosmetic is the perrin inlet hose and perrin foam filter. I don't see how that would cause a tranny to fail, but some dealers will use any excuse so I am prepared for that battle.

Edit: and by give new car, I mean they buy back my '13 brz and they let me buy a '14 comparable brz.

No way they can deny your claim just because of intake. They have zero in common. As far as buy back, don't count on it. They will fix and repair.

10-4, I have already had the car in the dealer for 20+ days combined due to the cam sprockets already... Kinda getting tired of this unreliability I have been experiencing. :/

Well that changes things a bit, but unless you had the car in the shop for same issue 2-3 times, thats when you might get subie to buy your car back. Good luck either way. I hope all end well for you

I've been waiting for the CEL to come back on a third time so it would be further along the path of the Texas Lemon Law.

Texas Lemon Law is a tough one:
http://txdmv.gov/motorists/consumer-...tion/lemon-law

It sounds like you are going to be working with the dealer to get this fixed unless they did not provide a loaner car to you on the previous issue.

For the cam sprocket issue, it has been in twice within the 12mo/12k miles threshold for a combined 20 days. My understanding is that for the cam issue it needs to go back in two more times and put the combined days in shop of all for times at >30. This issue seems unrelated and would have its own progression in regards to the lemon law.

Subscribed. Hope they work thing out for you in a timely manner. My 2011 WRX sat around for about 6 weeks before I finally resolved the issue myself with Subaru last year. They're a pain to work with sometimes, it just depends on how much pull the dealership has.

Same here.

Doesn't seem like this AT trans fail is a common issue. I believe this is the 1st AT trans fail on this forum.

Turkish, how many miles do you have on your car?

Someone either in nj/pa or ny just had their AT replaced (or is in the process of...) from what I read in a fb group.

Issue was more of a "slippage" when downshifting to 2 or 3rd where the lower gear would result in an RPM dip/slip, shortly followed by power kicking back on.
