Huge noise after hitting a big bump on the highway! Help? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hey guys. Last night, I was driving home on highway after work around 10 pm. It was pretty dark on the road. And near one exit there was a section newly finished road, I noticed the roughness on the road so I slowed down let the gas pedal out. Soon after my left front wheel hit on a big bump, the noise is so laud, I even felt an echo from my right rear end of car. I was afraid that my car would fall into pieces after that. My speed was around 85 km/h. Drove my BRZ home like normal, but I still worried about my suspension and chassis. Anyone have encountered anything like this so far? What have you done after? Is Subaru stubborn enough to survive this kind of impact? Any suggestions?

Still new to cars. Sorry for all these stupid questions here, but I have been so paranoid since.

If the car tracks straight, most likely you're fine. If you're really paranoid, get an alignment check + check the tierod/wheel for bends and bubble on the tire sidewall.

Take a look at the rims and tires to see if anything is bent or pinched.
Outer and inner sections.
Can use a mirror and flashlight to get to some parts of the inner rims.

I'd expect your wheel to crack, or tire to show some damage before anything else.

Have it checked, years ago I bent a wheel on my old GC8 Impreza RS on a huge pothole I hit at highway speed.

Could be someone's arm or leg caught in there.

Keep an eye over the next few weeks by monitoring your tire pressures. Sometimes you don't see damages to your wheels, but you can tell if your wheel is damaged by seeing if one tire is leaking air faster than the others.

I used to run 19 inchers, and I damaged my wheel over a pothole. Everything looked fine until I kept leaking air. At the tire shop, the guy found the very small dent in my rims when they did the pressure test by throwing the whole tire in a huge bucket and watch for bubbles.

As much as I liked my old 19 incher rims, I like having some more tire all the more.

These cars can take a beating on crappy roads. Just ask anyone who has taken their BRZ/FRS on the Belt Parkway on Long Island.

Have the ball bearings checked as well... I had a similar issue with my Protege, for the longest time I thought it was my wheels and it turned out to be the bearings.

^that. Wheels bearings make a pretty good grinding noise usually, but it could start less noisy and get worse over time.
