Downshifting
Does anyone ever downshift from 6th to 5th and feel a discomfort in doing so? It feels as if i really have to downshift to 5th with a little extra force than usual. Is this a problem?

na not for me. Shifting from 5th to 6th though isn't as smooth as i would like. Always remember though, shift smooth, and dont force it.

Have you tried double-clutching and rev matching? It shouldn't be necessary, but it's good practice to reduce synchro wear. When you do it right, the synchronizer doesn't have to do any work.

Revmatch and it should be smooth and easy.
In fact, no downshifts should be done without revmatching (unless if you are nearing a stop and the speeds are low enough) |

My 6th to 5th down shifts always crunch at speeds around and above 100km/h (60mph). Sometimes it's even impossible to preform the shift.
I rev match normally, even tried double clutching and every other trick in the book. Taking it in to Toyota and going to see what they say. BTW car is a 2013 and all other gears work fine. |

I dont rev match unless im in high RPM's...been driving stick for 10+ yrs on multiple platforms never had problems with early tranny wear...I practice for fun sometimes but normaly i dont do it, im usually always under 4k..................sounds like you may have a seperate issue, and i recommend getting a weighted shift knob also, theres not much effort for me shifting all the way up or down

My last car was a Hyundai Genesis Coupe.. Every gear (including downshifting from 6-5 and 5-4 is so much smoother. This is not the smoothest shifter I have owned, but pretty close.

What you're probably feeling is the gearing difference between 5th and 6th. 6th being a cruising gear, and 5th being the end of the "usable" performance gears, there's a bigger gap. In order for the synchros to engage 5th, they have to speed up the input shaft moreso than if you were going 5th-4th at the same RPM. So, the resistance, hesitation, bump, whatever you want to call it that you feel in the shift lever, is just the synchros doing their job. The only true way to eliminate the hesitation is to double clutch downshift as mentioned above.
Aside from that, it's completely normal. |

On the highway, I don't see much difference from 5th or 6th. Same torque pretty much. The gearing in this car is a little strange. When cornering at 30 mph or so, seems to me downshifting to 2nd is not too helpful either.
