exhaust buzzing 3k to 4k input please!
so have I have the ARK test pipe as well as catback exhaust and have an issue with the exhaust rattling around 3k to 4k when the throttle is pressed more than halfway, so kinda laying in on it. I have checked to see if the bolts were loose and there is no sign of anything being loose at all. I also checked the heat shield on the exhaust manifold and nothing is loose there. Mind you the test pipe does not have a heat shield so there can't be anything going on there. Since I do not have or know the torque specs for the exhaust, I tightened down everything pretty tight with an impact gun. I have noticed something though, which is condensation (not much) going from the test pipe to the catback where the donut gasket is. That portion I really tightened down in fear of it coming loose. Could this be the issue since there is not enough play in the system? Perhaps I over tightened that part of the exhaust? Any input would be great!!!
Note: mind you only in more than half throttle around 3l to 4k the noise happens otherwise it's gone. Otherwise if not on more than half throttle, the exhaust sounds perfectly fine without the noise. Last edited by ft86me; 03-24-2013 at 12:41 AM. |

there shouldn't be any sort of leakage.. and given that you noticed some condensation at the donut gasket, it might possibly be the linkage between test-pipe and catback that's making the rattle sound.
Call/email ARK and see what their opinion is on it. |

You very well could have overtightened something...the exhaust bolts only need to be tightened to 25 ft-lbs...tightening with an impact means they are probably closer to 125ft-lbs which could warp flanges.
Also check clearances around the transmission tunnel and those things, the Perrin had an issue where on some cars the resonator did not have enough clearance between the resonator and the trans tunnel and would hit the trans tunnel and make noise, easily fixed with a couple minor adjustments.

What you may be hearing is rasp from the test pipe. That is a common problem. The torque spec for the donut gasket is just 15 lbs.

I have this problem, the exhaust is hitting the crossmember right in the center of where the rear wheels are. The solution for me was slightly longer stiffer polyeutherane exhaust hangers.

i can hear mine coming from the front for sure. it's like the front right. doesn't sound like a rattling on something and plus I have the exhaust hangers wrapped with clamps so they don't sag

Yes. I have the same problem with the condensation but haven't been able to completely stop it.
