Can't torque my lug nuts socket too shallow :( - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

So i took off my wheels to install the mud guards only to find out afterwards that my wrench sockets are too shallow for the BRZ lug nuts. The brz lug nuts have this round spherical tip that makes my socket not able to grab deep enough. It's 11pm and I can't do anything about it

do you guys think if i bring it to the dealer tomorrow morning they can do it for me quickly? How much would it cost?

You plan... to drive to the dealership without lug nuts torqued down? Please tell me I misunderstood that or missed something. I'd personally say go buy a socket, do it yourself from now on and it'll probably take less time than taking it to the dealer.

THIS. Driving the car to the dealer without the wheels properly on the car does not sound like a good idea.

or the money you'll pay the dealer service can go to a nice and useful electric impact gun or a cordless one?

If your socket doesnt fit, how did you get them off? Just using the spare tire wrench? if thats the case, then yes tighten them manually with that then bring them in, or go buy a new deepsocket wrench set. Good luck

Tighten them the old fashioned way, with the wrench that came with your car. Drive to Pep Boys or some other discount car parts store. Buy a deep socket. Re-torque with your torque wrench. Enjoy a beer.

Yea i got them off with the wrench that came with the car. Now im tightening it temporarily using the same wrench. This is one wheel btw, front driver side. I didnt take off the other wheels and my dealer is 1 block away. Damn it was stupid not pre-fit my socket before taking it off. Who knew brz lug nuts have this big ass ball on the tip...

I just need the dealer to tighten one wheel. I hope theyll have a good customer service and just not charge me. No idea how much they gonna charge for a 3min job. I need to drive to work thats why i need it torqued asap.

There's no need to go to the dealership. Tighten the lugs a reasonable amount and they won't come off. If you're worried about it, just check that they aren't loose before each drive (will take 10 seconds).

After work, drive to the auto-parts/hardware store and buy a deep socket.

It's not a big deal.

Just tighten with the wrench until you get your own socket. Your car will be fine. Torque it later. Follow the manual (star pattern). Most of us don't travel with a torque wrench and would use the normal wrench in case of flat. This is no different. Your dealer's impact wrench probably won't be set to spec anyway.

Finally, I've never owned a car that had lug nuts that fit without a deep socket.

With my cars the torque spec for the lugs is about 90 lb-ft. (It's 89 for the BRZ). Tighten them by hand, but don't go crazy, and they'll be close enough. Seriously.

Oh, and use this opportunity to buy yourself more tools. You can never have enough.

i brought my car to the dealer Markham Subaru which is very close to my house. they torqued it for me first thing this morning so i can drive to work at least. Free of charge!

But yea next week i'm gonna go buy more sockets to fit the BRZ lug nuts better so i can finish installing the rear mud guards.

Go check out a local harbor freight, they have stuff on sale all the time and just buy some deep sockets, I'm sure you'll be needing them again anyway.
