Fuel overflowing when filling...

I have filled my car up with gas twice so far since I have had it and both times the pump overflows and spews out all over my car when using the auto stop feature that is on the pump handles... Is anyone else having this issue? I thought maybe it was the particular pump I used, but I tried a different pump (at the same station) and it did it again! I always make sure I go in and buy a bottle of water to dump on my car to wash off the fuel so that it doesn't wreck my paint though.

If I am the only one that seems to be having this problem, I guess I will have to try a completely different gas station next time to see if it repeats or not. If it still persists, I guess I will be making a trip to the dealer to see if maybe the overflow hose is clogged or something...

This has happened to me once with a pump that had the big accordian style boot on it. It seems every gas station in my area installed those. They all mysteriously disappeared after a month. I assume it was a common issue.

Do the pumps have the accordian rubber boot on them?

I think it prevented the nozzle from going deep enough in the filler for the auto shutoff to work properly.

I've read posts by a few people saying that this happened. I filled up mine 15 times so far and this didn't happen. If I were you, I would try another gas station.

I had this happen on my second or third fillup ever with this car. I stopped going to the station that it happened at since it seemed like my car didnt like the fitment of that particular nozzle.

Though I notice with different pumps, sometimes I really have to cram the fucking thing into the car to get a good seal.

Most (all?) gas pump nozzles have sensors to stop the flow of gasoline once the fuel inside the tank gets to a certain level, so if the nozzle isnt fully seated down into the fuel filler neck then this overflowing can happen.

Do you always set it with the auto feature so you can walk away? Have you tried doing it manually to see if it would stop if you were holding it instead?

I have had this happen and it sucks. find a station with a better pump and stick with it if you can. on a side fuel related note when the pump stops dont try to squeeze in a little more fuel to even out the price. doing this soaks the evap canister and over time will destroy it causing a check engine light.

All,
Last time I tried it without using the trigger lock, but just had it shut off while holding it and it still did it... It did have the accordian style boot on it, but I purposely held the nozzle in as deep as possible since it overfilled the time before and I was trying to avoid it. That attempt failed... I guess based on what others are saying, I will have to find a different station, but that sucks since this is one station that always seems to be the cheapest in town and I purposely make a trip out of my way to get to it... Oh, and no I don't try to top it off after it automatically stops.

At least I know I am not alone on this one... Seems like a bad design to me if others have this exact issue.

I usually listen for the "gurgle" of gas as it is getting near the top, then ease off on the nozzle. I don't recall spilling any on this car.

Never had this problem before as I always manually gas it instead of using the autofill function. Was kinda curious so I decided to Youtube it happening...

Kinda like this?...

Daj I didn't watch your vid but I can see its a wrangler. It happens with my Jeep, the little car has been fine. It's a combo of the filler neck angle and the rubber neck of the nozzle. The auto shut off works on suction/vapor lock so if you don't have the right seal it blows over. With the jeep I just do a manual fill no problems...if you poke on any of the jeep forums you can probably find a lot of write ups (www.jeepforum.com)

Hasn't happened to me unless I'm intentionally trying to top it off after the auto-stop (which isn't a good idea, therefore I try not to do it anymore).

I don't know what to say in regards to the OP's situation though...
