Broken Bolts changing control arm!
I was replacing the rear control arm (and putting in coilovers) and broke a bolt. Another one stripped a bit. Both of these happened while I was torqing them down!
Parts on order through Toyota! 3 to 5 days! Anyone know of suitable replacements? Scion Part numbers: SU003-02781 SU003-02804 |

Called Subaru. Noting in stock either.
The scion guy sent me the parts diagram. That was really nice. Basically, the bolt that connects the rear control arm to the wheel hub (not sure of real term for that assembly) and the bolt that connects the sway bar to the control arm. Going to bring the bolts in to Fastenal and see if I can get a temporary replacement. |

Surprising that both the bolts broke. Were you using an impact gun or something?

Yes I was using a torque wrench. The first thing I did was double check the settings. Ratchet type torque wrench.
I will say that I did remove the bolt twice, but still it should not have snapped. I did have to persuade it out (lightly with a hammer). This should not have happened! I think the tourqe specs are only 59 foot pounds. (dont have it here in front of me). |

I removed mine by hand, and used a hammer with a block of wood to persuade out. I did notice that bolt had a brittle feeling. Not sure if that makes sense.

Why were you replacing the control arm?

Any chance some of the control arm bolts specify turning the bolt rather than the nut? That was the case on my '00 Celica.

Nah, typically if that were the case the nut would have a tab welded on that would lock it against the control arm, which it does not. They're just a standard bolt and nut - shouldn't be too difficult to just buy a grade 10 bolt in the right size and throw it in. No need to go to the dealer for something like that, unless you like spending an absurd amount of money for what you can score at a hardware store.
