Cusco Intake Pipe

I was at a garage sale the other day and the guy had a number of BRZ aftermarket parts for sale that he had removed before selling the car.

One was a Cusco Intake Pipe replacement. It was supposed to be an exact replacement for the stock intake. The only real difference was that it was a chrome plated metal piece that had a fitting where you could screw in a plug to block off the sound pipe thingy. It also had blue flex connectors at the throttle body and air box connectors. I assumed it provided no real performance gain, and was probably just a cosmetic piece for the engine compartment.

I noticed there was a line on the installation sheet that stated the part was designed for use in Japan only and it must not be used in other countries. Actually they were the only words on the sheet written in english.

Was wondering if anyone knew why it would state this. Thought maybe it was a fitment issue with BRZ's not sold in Japan, but the guy said it installed perfectly and did not seem to cause any problem. I'm not really thinking about buying it, just curious about the statement in the instructions.

I would assume it's the same as "offroad use only".

Yes, exactly this.

Modification of specific sections of the intake and exhaust with aftermarket parts is not legal per CARB, unless the part has a CARB certification.

Why? A large number of cars sold to US market are qualified in accordance to and meet CARB emission standards.

You are probably correct. Just seems strange they didn't word it differently.

"Not for use in the U.S." would seem more appropriate than "designed for use in Japan and must not be used in any other country."

But then I'm not a Japanese to English translator so what do I know?
