Easy/Inexpensive Intake Sound Upgrade
Hey. I was wondering if there are any mods available for these engines to give me that nice deep intake suction/induction sound that you get from a Cold
Air Intake? I know it sounds like I answered my own question but I don't want to remove my bumper just to install a Perrin which looks and sounds great. I also know that intakes make negligible to no performance difference and is why I'm being real and saying I just want that deep engine bay sound. Anyone know any options that I can get that sweet sound without removing my bumper? Also, must be able to pass smog in CA. (2017 Toyota 86 Auto) |

If you don't care about hp loss, any short ram intake will work and create a throatier sound. Quick easy install too.

There's a set of I think, three different TRD kazoo whistles that you can use to replace the stock one mounted though the firewall for induction noises.
The twins already have CAI, as the intake is in the (relatively) cold air in front of the radiator. Short runs that stop inside under the hood are quite the opposite of CAI.

Well you won't really get much louder than the intake noise that's already being pumped into the cabin. It's not even really artificial it's just a resonator thats plumbed into the area under the carpet. If you want to hear what it will sound like without the intake tube take the cigarette lighter plug cover and lift the carpet and put the cover into the hole you find in the footwell.

I did the sound tube delete + Supertek intake pipe and high flow filter in the stock box. The combination gives the deep throaty sounds. You can take it further and cut and cap the resonating chambers on the stock intake box and snorkel.
Other people have gone to home depot and grabbed the rubber pipe end caps and clamps for the sound tube and resonator removals. Keep in mind that if plan to tune your car, aftermarket CAI can affect the maf readings differently.

You could replace the OEM rubber induction pipe with a alloy induction pipe.
I've seen a alloy intercooler pipe gerry rigged to fit, the breather was ducted into a 20mm? hole and a grommet was used to seal it. 4 hose clamps, 2 short silicon straights and "whalla", more induction noise Ut aslo has the snorkel mod as well and no resonator, but that picks up only a small increase in noise, and only really heard when standing right at the front bumper. I have a Mishimoto induction hose on mine to clean up the bay after removing the cabin noise maker, there was a slight increase of induction noise from that, sans the resonator as well as the snorkel mod. You could always get a reinforced silicone straight to 90° pipe and drill and grommet that. Just like a perrin or Mishimoto induction hose, but 1/3 the price. I went with the Mishimoto one because alcohol and Ebay were involved in the matter. |

I would recommend against deleting the resonance chambers on the intake, they are part of the equation to keep the MAF happy.

The Airraid CAI is one of the few that actually does lose power. Most make some power and if you do a little work around the bumper they don't suck in hot air. DSpoertMag found that the K&N and Injen intakes make the most power of all they tested.
