Valve train woes
Hello all,
New to the FR-S scene. After longing for one of these beauties I finally found what I thought was a good deal on a one-owner clean 40k 2013 Ultramarine model. Well, that was mid December '17. After driving it all the home to Charlotte NC from St. Louis with no issues and driving it to work everyday for the past month and a half, it decided to leak oil out of a small crack in the valve cover right by the spark plug tube on the driver's rear cylinder. Wondering what could have caused the cracked and not hearing any strange noises, and it still running OK, I smeared some JB-weld on it and found a used valve cover on ebay. So upon removing the valve cover (and the subsequent pieces of valve train falling out) I discovered the valve spring had broken on one of the intake valves and the small plunger that keeps pressure on the rocker arm wedged between the cam lobe and the cover. The valve is stuck closed which would explain it still running smoothly. I hadn't really pushed the car to notice any loss of power. Yes I am severely bummed. I also confirmed my suspicion with Scion that the car is out of Power train warranty. So I got all the parts out except for the keepers and cap that goes on the end of the valve stem, but there is damage to the boss where that small plunger goes so I will need, at a minimum, a new head. The intake cam lobe is also damaged. Anyone out there have them for sale? Any suggestions about approaching Scion/Subaru regarding the warranty since it only ran out a few months ago and is still good on mileage? Thanks in advance. This is a great forum. |

Rocker arms are kinda weak on these motors up until 15'. I have a 13' as well with over 60K and it gets tracked, knock on wood but no issues yet with mine.
