CEL P0351 Ignition Coil A
Hey guys,
So I was driving my car on an up hill normally. To accelerate, I shifted down and rev matched to about 4-5k room. However, after rev matching, the CEL showed up. I went to AutoZone and the Code was P0351. Bummed out, I went home, and left the car to use another car. About an hour later, I used the FRS again. When I started, the CEL was still on. But after 5-10 minutes, it went away. It's been about a week, and CEL hasn't come back. Should I even worry, and change the ignition coils? Or should I just wait. I got quoted $390 for labor and $480 for parts. THANKS!!! |

I'd suggest you clear the code and if it doesn't come back, I wouldn't worry about it.
It might just have been a hiccup (misfire). Back-in-the-day, engines did this every now and then. If the "miss" was consistent, @Tcoat or I would clean the plugs on the weekend. If more than one cylinder was misfiring, we would get a new set of plugs the next time we went into town..... ![]() Of course, @Ultramaroon would immediately go into town, buy and install a new set of plugs, new spark plug wires, a new coil, a new condenser, a new distributer cap and rotor and a new set of points....... humfrz |

Well known problem that usually hits track cars, not daily drivers, but holy fuck you're getting screwed on that quote though. The coilpack is ~$120 shipped to your doorstep when I last got one and it's <1 hour of labor you can do in your driveway with a few sockets and wrenches, anybody charging you more than $300 is screwing you over, nearly $900 is fucking outrageous.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30879 There's instructions in that thread about how to do it iirc. But if it doesn't return I would just leave it as is, I never fixed it the last time I got that code, that was over a year ago, it only appears for me when I'm on track and I haven't been back to the track since. I totally agree with humfrz that don't worry about it until it comes back. @humfrz Ultramaroon is too smart to do all that when it's less than a dozen bolts and one part to replace. Edit: OH, they might be charging you for all 4x and labor as if each one takes about 1 hour. Totally unnecessary, the code identifies that it's cylinder #1 with a problem so you should only need to change the one. |

Getting that code doesn't necessarily mean something's gonna break.
I get that code everytime I hit 8K RPM.. first time was 3 yrs ago, my car hasn't blown up yet. |
