CEL P0351 Ignition Coil A

Hey guys,

So I was driving my car on an up hill normally. To accelerate, I shifted down and rev matched to about 4-5k room. However, after rev matching, the CEL showed up. I went to AutoZone and the Code was P0351. Bummed out, I went home, and left the car to use another car. About an hour later, I used the FRS again. When I started, the CEL was still on. But after 5-10 minutes, it went away.

It's been about a week, and CEL hasn't come back. Should I even worry, and change the ignition coils? Or should I just wait. I got quoted $390 for labor and $480 for parts.

THANKS!!!

I'd suggest you clear the code and if it doesn't come back, I wouldn't worry about it.

It might just have been a hiccup (misfire).

Back-in-the-day, engines did this every now and then. If the "miss" was consistent, @Tcoat or I would clean the plugs on the weekend. If more than one cylinder was misfiring, we would get a new set of plugs the next time we went into town.....;)

Of course, @Ultramaroon would immediately go into town, buy and install a new set of plugs, new spark plug wires, a new coil, a new condenser, a new distributer cap and rotor and a new set of points.......:D

Well known problem that usually hits track cars, not daily drivers, but holy fuck you're getting screwed on that quote though. The coilpack is ~$120 shipped to your doorstep when I last got one and it's <1 hour of labor you can do in your driveway with a few sockets and wrenches, anybody charging you more than $300 is screwing you over, nearly $900 is fucking outrageous.

There's instructions in that thread about how to do it iirc. But if it doesn't return I would just leave it as is, I never fixed it the last time I got that code, that was over a year ago, it only appears for me when I'm on track and I haven't been back to the track since.

I totally agree with humfrz that don't worry about it until it comes back.

@humfrz Ultramaroon is too smart to do all that when it's less than a dozen bolts and one part to replace.

Edit: OH, they might be charging you for all 4x and labor as if each one takes about 1 hour. Totally unnecessary, the code identifies that it's cylinder #1 with a problem so you should only need to change the one.

.

Oh, I don't know about that ....... ol @Ultramaroon has a history of fixing stuff up first class ....... as opposed to my friend "Bubba", who would have just pulled spark plug wires until there was no change in engine speed and pulled that plug and cleaned it with a piece of baling wire .....

Yep, add a spark plug wrench, a thin dime and a tuned ear ...... and you got yourself a complete tune up kit .......

Fasho! I was just a little worried. I'm babying my car right now. Probably 3 years from now, I will start my engine rebuild...

Yeah... $390 for 4, but $310 for 1. They said they have to jack up the engine, which takes "labor." And Thank you for answering my question!

How do I do the "THANKS" thing that I've been seeing around? It's like "like" or something? Lol. Forum noob here

Getting that code doesn't necessarily mean something's gonna break.
I get that code everytime I hit 8K RPM.. first time was 3 yrs ago, my car hasn't blown up yet.
