Coilovers Springs?

So I'm really confused about this.
One of my friends brz's has ST coilovers, but when we were jacking it up, the springs on his coilovers were super loose and had A LOT of play. he told me that it's fine because when he lowers it, the spring compresses.

I just had mine installed, and I jacked my car up to see how my coilovers were. (was installed by a shop). and they had quite a bit of play also.

my concern is, is that how coilovers are suppose to be? are they not suppose to be compressed when you jack your car up?

In theory, the springs should not be loose ever.
If there is a gap, the gap should be taken by a "helper springs"
This is a small springs that is very light, and will fully compress as soon as any weight is on it.
The purpose is to make sure tension remain on the main springs at full droop (when you have the wheel in the air).

Do people run with slack in the springs?
Yes.

Does it cost a problem?
Not commonly, as the gap should go as soon as your car is on the springs.

Can it cost a problem?
Yes, I have seen springs that "dislocate" when there is a huge gap.

Would I do it?
Generally, no. Aside the fact that it is an immediate failure of all major European inspection test (MOT in UK, TUV in Germany and surround countries), it is just lazy to not include a helper springs but include enough adjustment so you can slack the main springs.

So you can decide what will work best for you.

Thank you so much Jerrick,

I fixed my front ones where there is no gap,
but my rears still have a little bit of gap when I jack my car up,

I can't get to making the spring compress in the rears without taking the coilovers apart from the car, not enough room..

Hopefully that will be fine for now until I get a better understanding.

The ST's are height adjusted with the spring perch. You want them tight? You'll have a high ride height. You want to go low? They will completely decompress when you jack the car up resulting in the looseness.
