Fail, remove the turbo, or pay someone under the table to pass them.

Pretty much what he said. And then if you get pulled over and get told to go to the ref, good luck with that shit.

Unless you have a 50 state legal turbo/supercharge kit you'll be fine.

If not, your boned. Either do it the shady way, or go back to stock.

Usually people worry about it when it comes around.... in 2018 at the earliest.

If you are looking to buy a used SBD/Zage turbo kit, it will be Craigslist Christmas 2018-2020 as the majority of these are sold-off in CA due to smogs.

Get a P.O. box in Bishop or Mariposa. No smog there.

Isn't letting a cop search under the hood voluntary?

on this topic, if you can get smog accounted for, would I get caught up in DMV inspection if my car's from out of state?

Nope, especially if there is probable cause.

There's several things that you are asking about, you need to be specific.

1) DMV performs no inspections of any kind, unless you total a car or if you buy a car from out of state and are trying to register it in CA.
2) DMV inspections can be done at any police agency or by any peace officer.
3) DMV inspections do not cover smog testing.
4) Smog testing is by ZIP code, and every 2 years. First 4 years are exempt, smog starts on 6th year of ownership... or with title transfer that is not gifted to/from immediate family member.

Right, it's being registered in CA from out of state.

Aside from the new car part, everything else that I wrote is still relevant.

Right, so I assumed the inspection is where I get caught up. Like I said, I can get smogged. But the CHP/DMV will know about my mods.

they won't care.

The inspection part is only to verify the VIN. 99% of the time they won't care.

Just have it inspected at the DMV, takes longer but it will be less hassle free as they have zero authority to make judgment calls on whether it is in violation or not.
