We must be measuring "steep" differently.

Been a long week for you, there, spike021?

You said "so I was stopped on what was probably a 60+ degree hill."

"Filbert Street and 22nd Street in San Francisco have a maximum gradient of 31.5% (17.5°).[2] The steepest hill on Filbert is the east half of the block between Hyde and Leavenworth; like 22nd St it is one-way down. The city map shows a descent of 65 feet, which based on a half-block being 206.25 horizontal feet makes the grade 31.5%, the official figure. The sidewalk-only section of Broderick Street (between Broadway and Vallejo, where the city map shows a climb of 96 feet in the 275-foot block) is steeper, just under 35% grade, and a block west the sidewalk-only block of Baker Street is a bit steeper than that. An unofficial survey of San Francisco streets declared the steepest street in San Francisco to be a 30-foot section of Bradford Street 37.7373°N 122.4097°W, paved in 2010, with a 40% grade.[3] The curvy Lombard Street started as a 27% grade.[4] Three streets in Los Angeles are steeper—28th Street in San Pedro at 33.3%, Eldred Street in Highland Park at 33%, and Baxter Street in Silver Lake at 32%.[5]"

Good thing it's the weekend!

To somebody relatively new to MT many of those streets would seem to be even more than 60 degrees. Especially sitting at a light with the locals watching and critiquing your start.

I live in Lancaster, even the horse & buggies don't have hill assist and coast backwards without flinching at the uphill intersections

Really.

"Buggy brakes are automotive-style, non-powered drum or disc brakes mounted to two wheels. When a driver wants to stop, he or she halts the horse using the reins and halts the buggy by stepping on the brake pedal so that it doesn't run into the horse. Our builder estimates 90 percent of buggy buyers stick with drums, in part because of the old-fashioned aesthetics—braking systems on buggies are very visible—and partly because all drum components can be made in Amish communities."

Hey it is definitely better in my opinion. I learned on a 17 I got in 16 within 3 weeks I turned it off. Stalled so much less. I stalled at lights where I didn't even realize it was a gradient before. After it never happened. Just take your time and learn hill starts.
Btw also Ryan

Activated the hills start assist to try/test it before going onto the hills of San Francisco in the future. Can't believe I stalled so much and it was only a a very slight slope (my driveway no less!!). Doesn't feel natural. Guess I just have to get the timing right. I could use the e-brake, but hey the 86/BRZ comes with this feature so why not? I would only turn this on if I knew that I was going into the city. But, back to more practice first...

Oh, my -

Are you saying that you are having difficulty going up your driveway using the hill assist?

Might I recommend that you rent a car with an AT, before driving in SF -
