With several post recall failures, I'm surprised you didn't wait a bit to see how this all plays out.

I agree with that. In fact, It's been my experience dealers farm out AT work beyond standard maintenance. It is definitely more specialty work than replacing springs.

So has anyone paid the dealership for a new engine? That is all I'm being offered. I need to find some money because I need my car.

Just haven't been able to stop thinking about it since the recall news came out, had to go for it just to get peace of mind. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about it but oh well, just hope for the best. My local Toyota dealer has always been good to me so I expect positive results.

I stopped by yesterday in the evening to grab my phone charger and got to see the car, the engine and also talked to technician for a bit, we're also replacing the spark plugs, belt and rubber hoses.

Got a call around 5pm today letting me know the car is ready. I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning.

How much are you paying for the plugs, belt and hoses?

You should start an Etsy account with those thick beads. We'll be waiting for updates, hopefully it goes well for you

Found this in the Subaru document as well,

"• Contact the SOA Techline immediately to review any concerns believed to be impeding or preventing proper completion of this recall. There should be very few if any cases where this would be necessary. A severe example of an impediment would be if the wrong specification engine is found to be installed. Nearly all aftermarket modifications can be worked around or removed to allow valve spring replacement to proceed.
• Contact the SOA Claims Team should removal and / or reinstallation of these customer modifications require significant additional time."

The whole process on the Subaru side seems much better than the Toyota side. Even the work instructions, they don't look like they're written for a 12 year old.

Subaru: words, written in plain English. Toyota: pictures, explaining that an evil engine can hurt you.

I think instructions for toddlers is a better way to go though. Leaving anything for interpretation seems like a bad thing.

I see they didn't use 1217H packing on your car either. Actually I just popped my hood to refresh my memory on the color of it after it's cured and it's a darker gray than I recalled. Your looks black though. Maybe just the photos.

As for the bleeding you show in your pictures. I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Actually it could even be a good thing. The instructions want the bead to be closer to the outside of the cover so it ends up bleeding out more than bleed in.
