Awesome photos everyone! I agree with @nelsmar about using a prime lens for a while, it's my preferred way to shoot these days. There was actually a specific trip that I can say was the defining turning point for my photography, and it was one where I only used my 50mm 1.8 prime lens.
Photography has been one of my primary hobbies for a little while now, here are some of my favorites. A lot of them were taken in Japan, as I've spent a lot of time there. There's definitely a reason it's called a "Nifty Fifty".
I have an 18-55, 55-250 and 50-1.8 prime and my favorite is my fifty. Buddy just picked up a 500-1000 that I get try this weekend and in my future is an 18 or 25 and 85.

50's on aps-c's are kinda meh though
even though their perspective is best, the cropped vision forces you to take a step back when you otherwise wouldn't have to can't wait someone makes a Fuji X series sized camera with full frame sensor that doesn't cost 5k (or whatever the current leica's pull) **edit apperantly sony is getting there with theri A7 and 7R, but those are near 2-2.5k after taxes and all... hot damn.

And yeah 50 on a 35mm sensor is ideal. thats why i push towards a 35mm, its closer to our viewing perspective. iirc its around 28mm for an APS-C found in canon's cameras for the equivalent of a 50mm on a 35mm film camera. Nikon's lower bodies were 1.5 crop though iirc, and their 35mm is oh so much better than canons. I just had a friend recently purchase a d3100 and 35mm. He fought me the entire process over a few days... then gave in and thanked me the next realizing thats what he was really needing (this is his third camera, he keeps using kit lenses and selling them shortly after). The nifty fifty was a big deal to me when i was starting out. Once i put it on, it never came off for almost 6 months. Its a cheap piece of shit with horrible focus, horrible focus ring, horrible plastics, horrible build, but for the price an absolutely amazing piece of glass haha.
