kind of surprised by these figures. I'm a senior IT PM with 10 years experience or so, and I hire people all the time. I've never handed out a contract below 80k/yr in the last 10 years. and those were only for newbies.

I am making 50k as a new grad software developer... and I am not even the lowest among my friends...

I'm guessing it's a little location/company biased. I'm on the east side, which probably skews those numbers.

If you are in Houston and in IT you should be fine. I get calls from recruiters CONSTANTLY asking me if I want X job. Normally over 100k offers. We actually just filled the position here with a Windows guy because we couldn't convince a Linux engineer to work for our measly 175k offer. People are getting fat out here right now

While i am tech savy, i am not in the IT field. I am familiar with Linux as well but have no degree. Ive worked alot for the military and primarily do production scheduling for aircraft.
