I'd even go as far as saying I could probably get up through the box 1st to 6th via every gear and back down again without you noticing a gear change and in under 10 seconds.

Not saying that's always the case, sometimes I'm too lazy to be smooth.

To you US guys a manual is a special thing, so you go on the interweb and you research and research and come back with all these fancy and all but superfluous techniques so you can brag about them to your mates and say you "can drive stick the hard way". Over here people will just look at you and say, "You can drive a car? So what, my 16 yo. daughter can drive a car!" and if you say, "But I can double de-clutch!", they will say, "Do what?", you explain, they will say, "Why on earth would you do that?"
I double clutch and rev match and heel toe, not because I think it makes me cool, or because it's "the hard way" but because of its benefits to the longevity of the transmission and driveline in general, driveline shock ? What driveline shock there is none when you do this properly,
Annnnnd it's just more fun. I buy standard cars for the sake of doing something, the more complicated i make it for myself the more fun it is, it's easy once you learn it, it's better for the car, has nothing to do with bragging rights or being cooler than the next guy that doesn't do it,
Taught 2 of my friends how to do it, and they love it, it's just fun, and it just feels better than cruising at 100 and dropping to 5th while letting the syncros work things out for you <- it feels like shit IMO

I beg to differ on getting into 1st. When hooning it, coming into a hairpin you can get into 1st at 20mph if you want, without any damage. Just don't force it in and rev blip will make the clutch lift less abrupt.

The syncro on 1st is always a little tight to remind you not to shift into first or to prevent you from grabbing 1st accidentally when you wanted 3rd.

2nd to first at 20mph IS a valid use case though if you are driving on the limit and intend to get the tail out round a hair pin bend.

I remember the first time I drove the FR-S I noticed it doesn't go into 1st even at 5mph, however it starts in 2nd fairly easy, so it made sense to me to just use 1st at a dead stop.

Some cars are opposite, especially older ones. My MR2 doesn't like starting in 2nd, but can get into 1st while rolling slowly smoothly. But anything over 10mph and it's better to just get into 2nd.

Rule #1 NEVER shift into first while in motion... not exactly never, but 99% of the time if youre in motion over 10km/h [6mph] id say you are fine to stay in 2nd,
"never go back into first unless you're at a crawl that 2nd gear would stall"

Rule #2 If it sounds bad, or if it feels bad, then it was bad, so dont do it again

rule number 2 is the easiest to get, if properly operated you should never hear any grinding from your transmission, if what youre doing is making it grind, do it differently,

annnnd side note.. 20mph is an outrageous speed to shift back into first, IMO, i suggest just downshifting till you get down to second gear, depress clutch and if you come to a complete stop sure go for 1st, if youre rolling at like 2-5 mph, sure EASE it into 1st, minimal to no damage done, it will go in, but dont try smashing it in there,
if youre going any faster than that, dont try to fight the transmissions lock out, just go really gentle on the clutch and throttle in 2nd and continue on your way

Yes the first time you learn something its infallible and your view should never change. Your probably doing real great things man good luck with your cootie infection..

First doesn't lock you out if your rev match. Its as smooth as any other gear shift. But yea spread your misguided crap to other people because your too damn informed to read any other information.

Part of what makes this car fun is to get into it and figure it out.

Strange, everything eddie had to say, I agree with.

Funny that 1st gear in this trans is the only one that has a part named "1st Shift Restrict Ball"
If that isnt some kind of "lockout" then I dont know what it is for.

At least I can verify that this trans does have a synchro for 1st so the engineers must have thought someone would need that.
I cant imagine any actual need for downshifting to first except "cuz racecar".
So others say: "Dont downshift into 1st unless you are at a complete stop."
And you pretty much chime in with "Just go for it!".

NIIIICE!

You shouldn't have any problems shifting down to first if you rev-match properly.

I have a '99 M3 that requires that you rev-match and double-clutch to shift into first while moving. My BRZ on the other hand will happily (and easily) slide into first as long as I rev-match.

I do this all the time while heel-toeing to a stop.

Not to throw fuel on the fire, but this car doesn't have much torque, so IMHO there's plenty of reason to downshift into 1st.
