Maybe name brand shops like Sears or Costco, but a standard local shop will install almost any tire you want.

Seriously, I paid $720 shipped for my winter tire/wheel package sans TPMS sensors. That is 16" steelies and Continental ExtremeWinterContact tires with lug nuts. best part is I don't have to deal with a shop and all of that nonsense!

I bought OEM sensors from Tirerack.

Were the tires mounted? Sounds like you just had 'em shipped to your house and bolted them on.

Stupid question time:

How difficult would it be to change the tires myself if I had mounted/balanced snows shipped directly to my house?

Also, has anyone dealt with My Tire Guys (mobile tire service company)?

Yeah, it's not a tough process at all. I'd do it myself, but the parking lot where I live isn't even and I live less than 5 minutes from a Town Fair.

I'm glad you figured out the bolt pattern for our cars!

Any tire shop will do it for you for less than $50. Why bother - you spend more on necessary tools?

I bought wheels with generic snow tires and TPMS off Craigslist for $200 for 16" rims, they have a safe 1 season left and I'll probably replace the rubber next year. They were previously used on a WRX.
I'm not sure what the deal with the TPMS is, I never changed anything or did anything with the computer, a couple hundred miles later I have yet to see a light, I thought I would need to bring it into a dealer with the new ones or the new ones would not be compatible, but no light yet.

Basically I'm looking to get this done as cheaply as possible.

I'm going to spend for good snow tires and steelies, but I want to avoid dealing with the TPMS crap. (I don't mind a light on my dashboard, and I know how to tell if air pressure is getting low.)

My plan is to order mounted/balanced tires/wheels from Tire Rack and have them delivered to my house. From there, I can either install them myself or drag 'em to a shop to have it done, but the language at TireRack.com is making me think a reputable shop won't install them if they don't include TPMS. (Specifically, I'm talking about: "NHTSA's interpretation of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits service providers from installing aftermarket tires and wheels on your vehicle without working TPMS sensors.")

Someone want to clarify if that's the case or not? Does it not apply if you bring the tires already mounted?

Sorry for the noobishness... I'm new to the whole snow tire thing, and also to TPMS. My newest previous car was a '95 Celica.

Really? Last I checked everything you need is provided with the vehicle and in your trunk!

Thanks, Shaun.

What's the going opinion on winter sports vs. ice & snow tires?

I feel like the roads around here are cleared well enough that I'd rarely need the extra traction the ice & snows offer. Are winter sports (like the Dunlop 4D) good enough for an occasional excursion in deep-ish snow?
