Ok, here is my update. I am #84 on this list. 600 total miles FR-S.
Took car into Reno Toy/Scion yesterday with CEL on and SL. Told Service guy "Mark" about the rough idle and handed him the first 4 pages of this thread. He had never heard of this problem. Looked for Service bulletins, found none. I mentioned about latest news being a New ECU or a Flash of it.
They never got the car on the reader, and just drove me home.

Got a call from Mark at 1 pm today.
He said: "Talked to Toyota, they are sending a new ECU. No ETA on it's arrival date. Toyota wants us to not release the car back to you for "safety reasons" I will call you when I get more info."

I said thanks and hung up.

I called back just now to find out what CODES were dropped, but I just got his voice mail.
I will update here as soon as he calls me back.

Exclamation Why the ECU change is working from "TheZombi" in Canada

From all the frightening reports from the states and the stories of the dealers ripping apart new engines and everything else I decided to do a little checking. The reported problem is that the computer is interrogating the camshaft sensors too many times a second (that was from the mechanic) the actual problem seems to be the exhaust cam in my car does not hold it's position when the engine is turned off, as it sits for a few minutes if the engine is stopped in a particular spot the cam turns slightly and the pressure backs off inside the actuator, then when you restart there is a big old air bubble there that needs to clear and it will throw a code until it does. If you reset the code after a few minutes of idling you do not see the problem again until you park it. I think their re-flash is simply going to increase/introduce a timer to ignore camshaft misposition for the first couple minutes of running so the VVT system can bleed out all the air bubbles and settle down. This makes sense to me as the problem only manifests itself after a few hundred KM's of driving and then becomes persistent in most cases, I now wish I had changed my oil at 200KM.

Anyways I will give my findings to the mechanic when I see him next week and see if he gets all pissy at the customer who thinks he knows something.

In the industry I am in many problems like this end up getting fixed with some minor reprogramming like adding timers the machines then run for decades without issue.

The only problem I see is they must make sure that if a camshaft is mispositioning during actual operation the ECU must freak out and give a code and then it needs mechanical repair. If it is in fact just a startup issue until whatever air bleeds in there clears then it should not affect the long term operation of the car but you can bet money I will get into the habit of warming up the car for a couple of minutes before I drive anywhere...
Zombi ROCKS!

UPDATE: Service manager just called me and told me the Toyota Engineer (who makes visits to dealerships monthly) was there today and my car came up in discussion. He told them the fix for my car was replacing the ECU and not the accuator which was on back order. It worries me a little that these service people don't know the correct fix, and he admitted that they do not have direct access to the engineers when problems come up and its harder when its a brand new product. I am feeling pretty lucky now, cuz there was an ECU in Portland and is being shipped overnight and if all goes well I could have my car back tomorrow!!! I am trying not to be excited, but I can't help it!

1) Call Scion Customer Service and get a case started. Car payments are being covered by Scion while you don't have access to your car.

2) Establish a friendly relationship with the service writer and the tech doing the work. Make sure they know how important it is this is done right.

3) Keep us in the loop!

Yup. Specifically ask to speak to the tech performing the work on your car. Remember his/her name and when you check in, check in with him/her too...

I got the call back from Mark: Only code noted by Mechanic P0019
ECU to be shipped from Cincinnati, ETA 4 to 5 days.

Hope this does the trick.

Server writer called me, confirmed that they are going with the ECU replacement instead of tearing up a beautiful motor. wont get the codes until tommorow morning as the tech left for the day.

Managed to get a part number of it, coming from california and wont get it until next week.

TOY-SU003-04522

Service writer did also mention to me that the codes were camshaft timming related so I will get those codes tommorow.

Also noticed the same part number used here. I wonder if the other stuff is necessary anymore since im only getting the ecu changed.
