My CEL came on at first stop light driving away from the dealership. Yes the engine is lumpy at idle, but I guess having driven heavy cammed V8's before it just doesn't bother me. I think I give it a little gas when it needs it, never stalled in traffic. No slip light so far (300 miles.)
You have to wonder how much of this is that it is not easy to drive an engine with an aggressive cam and a clutch ? My speculation is still that the cam gears are fine but the ECU is holding the idle on the edge for california emmisions or some stupid regulation. Honestly I would also speculate that if the "fix" really turns out to be the cam gear, then the performance will take a hit. If the "fix" turns out to be the ECU, then we all win, no problems. The reports that bother me or the couple guys who smelled burn oil and got a limp home mode. Those seem isolated and probably not related to this higher reported issues. Fingers crossed. How is the report that the aftermarket company (ecu**) who flashed the latest firmware took care of the problem standing, still no CEL ? Last edited by regal; 09-10-2012 at 08:25 AM. |

With any luck -- and I do mean luck -- I should have my BRZ back today. That would put me a day shy of four weeks with the car at the dealer, although I actually threw the CEL on 8/12. The witch at the dealer service desk must have not even known what a BRZ is, because she was completely unapologetic and told me she had no room for my car.
No, no, no, it's cool, lady, I'm sure orbital HQ has no interest in field failures of brand new products, please do feel free to tell me to go pound sand. Eager to also see the GPS update, and whether the speaker grill and passenger auto-scroll have been addressed. Will see if I can get some macro shots of spent mechanical bits, if they haven't already been returned to Subaru. I would guess they have. If I were an engineer for Subaru instead, I would be pretty cranky about now if parts had failed and I hadn't seen them.

When I had a turbo replaced on my FXT they let me look at and take some pictures of the turbo center section but the part had to be sent back to Subaru.
I'm also hopeful this isn't truly a mechanical problem. Eagerly awaiting the new TSB from Subaru. I just passed 2000 miles on my BRZ and have had no idle issues at all. I changed the factory oil out at 1000 miles with 0w30 Motul. As for doing an oil change at the same time there is a small amount of oil which might be lost or contaminated so they probably just change it as a precaution. |

I just picked mine up from the dealer. It was there for a total of 6 days. I believe mine was dealt with so quickly, because of a fellow ft86club.com member (SubieNate). He pressed the issue, to get parts in quicker (which they did for all of our cars in the shop at that moment).
Here's a list of what they did: SU003-04522 Unit-EGI Control SU003-00096 Valve Ay-Oil Cont SU003-00287 Spkt Ay-CMS,Exh Lh SU003-02183 O-Ring-12.1x2.5 00295-00103 FIPG Oil Pan 00272-GTBC1-01 Super Long Life Coolant Blue Notes: 445 P0019 Ck Engine Light on 140991 8.90 Technician opened case with TAS. Technician cleared codes and swapped OCV. Technician test drove vehicle. Technician removed and replaced bank 2 EX, camshaft gear and OCV. Technician also replaced engine ECU as per TAS. When I signed the paperwork to get my car back, I noticed it would have been just under $2,000 to have the above repaired.

Mine sits at Toyota now here in Sweden
Seems like i am the first one in the whole sweden with the problem but that might be beacuse only about 20 cars have been deliverd. They pulled code P0017 when checking. Will have them take a look at what TemeCal posted regarding parts to replace.

Report YOUR ISSUE - OPEN A CASE!!!
I purchased my car on 8/24 with 7 miles on it. While driving out of the dealership, I smelled a funny burning scent (plastic or something), but thought, maybe it was because the car was brand new. At about 17 miles, the car started to experience idle dip, shuddering, and loss of power. I thought that maybe it was just a weird fluke thing.
The following day, at approximately, 50 miles, I was backing into a parking space, the RPMs dropped and the car started driving horribly. Then it corrected itself. At 170 miles the CEL and the slip light came on. I immediately contacted the dealership. They asked me to bring the car in, so they could try and reset the notification lights. 5 miles after the reset, both lights were back on. I immediately called the dealership back and they scheduled my car for drop-off on Monday (8/27). On 8/29, I was contacted and told that they needed to order the following parts: UNIT-EGI CONTROL COMPUTER SPKT ASSEMBLY – CMS, EXH LH It’s 9/11 and my car is still in the shop. I just got a call from the dealership to inform me that my permanent license plates are in for me to pick-up! Great! Thanks. I’ll just carry my plates around until I have a car to put them on. I’ve contacted Scion Customer Experience Center at 1.866.707.2466 and opened up a case with them. EACH PERSON on this board that has this issue should take the time to contact them as well. Subaru has their own Customer Experience Center (I don’t have that info). When I talked to my case specialist, he informed me that there were approximately 50 cases of this issue reported to the Scion Customer Experience Center. Looking at the thread regarding this issue… we KNOW there are more of us out there. From ones who have added to this thread… to people that are just so pissed about the situation that they’re in, that they don’t even want to deal with reporting it. WE ALL NEED TO CONTACT THEM AND LET THEM KNOW HOW MANY OF US THERE ARE. In addition, if you contact them and push compensation, they will do everything they can to try and fix the issue… from making your car payment(s) to possibly paying for or reimbursing you for your extended warranty. They are not going to take care of us unless we all complain at this level. I keep seeing people post “That’s what you get for buying a first year car…” I don’t care that it’s a first year car… we all paid full price for a brand new car and regardless of the “first year” thing, they need to compensate us for their horrible QA on this vehicle. It’s not our problem. This is a TOYOTA/SUBARU! What I thought was a reputable car manufacturer. Don’t settle. Take the time and push this up the chain. Make them accountable for their mess!

I feel bad for people who have their car serviced at the dealer ship. I can understand no one wants this to happen. But in my experience, when it comes to engine or transmission work, those 'master' at the dealer ship will fail. Dealership techs can do oil changes and maybe brake jobs or simple installation but engine work is never their strong point. Specially with warranty work like this, they are under pressure to perform the job as fast as they can. And most of the time they are proudly measure their work by quantity, not quality.

Next, compensating you for the horrible Q&A. At this point it's too early to blame anyone or anything, there is insufficient data to form an accurate opinion. Since we've bought this car from one of the largest auto manufacturers in the world you have to believe they will compensate all of us and probably on a case by case basis unless something changes in the near future, which it appears that they're doing currently in helping customers get their car back on the road. Yes, indeed it is a Toyota/Subaru. They are considered reputable manufacturers and the current issues with our beloved car will not change this belief no matter how much vitriol we post about a car with such a limited run of production. So far I have yet to hear anyone settling for anything, everyone appears to be doing the best they can with their issues with their car. Again, it would probably be judicious to not call this a mess. It's a technical problem with a new model of automobile and from everything that I've read here it appears that the manufacturer is doing their best to rectify the situation. Histrionics will not help you in dealing with the problems at hand unless you perhaps need a moment to vent your emotions and then return to the task of sorting out your new car's issues. A cool tactical mind will help you find a resolution that will please you and the dealer who does not want you to leave an angry customer as it is not to their benefit. They realize full well that the internet is greater than the media and can cause them more grief than a brief mention in a TV newscast. Hold fast, be patient and try to maintain your dignity in a difficult situation. We are all together in this and we will get through it and dare I say be better for it, a tighter knit community with a high degree of resolve and hopefully a measure of respect from the manufacturer for our love of this unique vehicle. I have owned several performance cars where I did not enjoy the company of fellow owners but this car has gotten me in touch with some unique individuals who clearly have great character and buckets of class. Stay strong friends and realize that you may be fighting your struggle alone but we are all behind you as owners of the FR-S/BRZ. |

Very similar to mine, but not surprising since we had our serviced at the same dealer. Mine had a few o-rings replaced (yours didn't). You had brake cleaner involved (mine didn't). Wonder what they used the brake cleaner for????
