My 15-20% estimate is probably quite high, perhaps a hyperbole, but it seems that its all I hear about on this site lately

Like you said, anything over 1% is cause for concern from a manufacturing/engineering standpoint, and that would appear to be the case right now.

say 200-500 cars affected world wide. How many have they sold this year? 20000? 2.5% of cars made

There is no data on how many cars are affected worldwide or if it's even an issue with the vehicles sold outside of North America.

I would say there are probably 150-200 cars affected in the US alone between the BRZ and FR-S. There are 60+ reports on this board alone.

Hey Opie,

You have any word when this new TSB will hit your dealerships.

Seems like Subaru canada is a little slow up here.

Well.

After throwing a ragetantrum in an e-mail to Subaru yesterday, I got a call this morning saying there's good news for a change, and the dealer should have the new ECU tomorrow.

Tomorrow! Boy, I'll believe that when I see it.

Heaven have mercy on the soul of the person who picks up the phone at customer service tomorrow should this turn out not to be the case. I'm so sick of being jerked around.

Is this new ECU suppose to not have the flaws of what we have currently.

Have you been following this issue at all? All of the information should be in this thread...

I have already had my exhaust cam sprocket and OCV replaced. The ECU threw P0019 again, immediately.

The ECU arrving tomorrow is brand new, shipping from Japan on what has been a very long leadtime but seems to have been shortened.

This ECU is believed to resolve the P0019 CEL issue. Subaru are building this thing up to be the silver bullet...so I'm not sure whether I'll laugh or scream if it doesn't work. How it does this is another matter. Two thoughts there. Either the engine is actually fine, and the ECU really is too sensitive, or the ECU is simply being told to ignore what's currently causing the P0019 issue. We should give Subaru the benefit of the doubt here and assume that they're responsible designers.

However, I'm really curious what would necessitate an actual hardware replacement vs a simple reflash. I can think of many things that could...I just wonder which it is. I'm sure only portions of the ECU are externally reprogrammable. There could also be a bad component, or something.

I've been following with all the topics it's hard to keep track of what stage everyone is in when comes to this damn issue, 54 ppl and counting.

I picked mine up on Wednesday and drove for bit now it's in the shop.

When I keep hearing new ECU, I'm thinking the same as you.

"However, I'm really curious what would necessitate an actual hardware replacement vs a simple reflash."

Just don't get that myself, but I hope you get that ECU and never have to go back to the dealer.

Good points all around! I've had no CEL, but I do have idle issues from day one. I felt that since I have not had the CEL that the troubles I have had with the car have been largely ignored by my dealership. I sent them an email asking for an update and they are going to press Toyota for one. The engine stumbled again on me yesterday in traffic, but didn't stall.

So did they replace the cam gears in both the left and right banks? If you are getting the code again, the opposite side cam gear could really have an issue. They are replacing both on mine. If they haven't done this for you then I don't know if the ECU will be the silver bullet.

Update

Hopefully the last update for me on this topic. I called today and learned that I will get the car tomorrow. They were able to install the second cam gear and reassemble it. The delay was caused by the gasket compound they use to seal the engine up. Apparently Toyota uses a black compound which dries fast. They were instructed only to use a Subaru compound which is gray and more runny. After getting a hold of this compound and using it, they tested the car and it ran fine. They later found out that the gray compound takes longer to harden and it had run all over. So I guess they are doing some cleaning but no more Check Engine light according to the tech. I'll update my repair progress to the CEL list thread after I try it tomorrow.
