The first cat will not be overstressed or plugged earlier if the second cat is removed. First cat will not do more catalytic conversion after second cat is removed. There will simply be less catalytic conversion of the exhaust gas especially when the converter is cold.

After my stock front pipe was too much rusted, I have installed HKS dual resonated front pipe. I have also catted stock header. I think exhaust gas smells just a bit more for the first minute after cold start. Then, there is no smell after engine warms up ... just like all other catted cars. Sound is a just bit louder (or different) but there definitely less drone with HKS Hipower SpecL catback I have.
