I would prefer something application specific as opposed to a universal one if any vendors are checking this thread...

Just want to get some clarity on this. I just received my Cusco Oil Catch. Is it actually functional or should I not open it and send back?

Now, other than it looking nasty, it also increased detonation on those motors. Presumably that could be an issue with these 12:1 compression motors, but nobody has the mileage to determine how much.

I've got a couple of different breather catch tanks we make (different brackets for different models) so I'll probably fit one up. There is not many (if any) FR-S/BRZ specific catch tanks at this point, probably just adapted ones from the Turbo Subaru or Evo models. The typical older gen Subaru has two breather lines that T into one to the inlet - the FRisBee twins just have a single line from pcv straight to inlet. So one of the inlet ports will need to be blocked off.

Paul, I would love to see a FRS/BRZ specific set up from you guys. Do your systems use any sort of baffling?

We do use baffling in the system, nothing too complicated - but then, catch cans are not complicated technology.

they are really badass pieces but i think $300+ for a oil catch can is a little to much when you can have pieces with the same quality and do the same work for a lot less...my 2 cents.

Um, yeah, if I'm going to spend money on oily cans with nipples attached, it sure as hell won't be what you guys are buying!

You might want to do some more research.

Need some education on these. So they help prevent oil from returning the motor via the breather tube? How do they function in conjunction with oil coolers?

Modern engines feature a variety of emission control devices and systems to reduce the toxic gases released into the atmosphere. One of these is called the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. During the combustion process a small amount of gases leak or “blow-by” the piston rings and create a positive pressure in the crankcase. The PCV system vents these gases along with oil mist from the crankcase and routes it back into the intake manifold so it can be burned off. The problem is that over time the excess oil vapor collects along the inside of the intake tract and forms a “gunk”. This can lead to a variety of issues including carbon build up, retarded timing, detonation, and decreased performance.

A catch can or air-oil separator is a device that will condense and collect the oil vapor before it has a chance to reach the intake system. As the gases and oil vapor enter the can they typically pass through a screening mechanism that gives the oil vapor something to condense against. As the droplets form they drop harmlessly into the bottom of the reservoir so that they can later be drained or in some cases returned to the engine. The other gases are allowed to pass through so that they can be burned of as intended.

None of this has any interaction with an oil cooler.

I'm running a Cusco in my MR2. No idea how well it's working, but it looks purdy! You could always powdercoat the can if it's too blingy for your tastes. I feel like this part doesn't have to be too fancy to work, I.E. the Crawford one looks like overkill on an otherwise stock car.

I like the location of the Cusco; it's pretty out-of-the-way:

I called Crawford today. They said the frs/brz specific can is on order with their fabricator but things are running slow right now and they are not sure when they will be available. At least they are on the way!
