Check your oil level. As long as you've got the right amount of oil, I don't think it's anything to worry about.
Direct injection tends to be a bit more noisy than other EFI systems. Wings' suggestion is a good one, if you're really worried. You can also use a screwdriver with a long shaft and press the handle against your ear. This is kind of like a poor mans stethoscope.

I'm certain you are hearing the sound of the direct injection system. My '06 GTI has direct injection and at an idle it can sometimes sound like a diesel. In fact I walked by a Jetta TDI the other day as it was idling and it was quieter than my GTI.

Gotta agree w WoW. It's better to play safe than "assume" things. Specially w an engine.
If you can post the vid of the noise, it might help Last edited by ichitaka05; 06-04-2012 at 09:19 PM. |

Thanks for all the posts guys! WoW I'm gonna see if I can do something like that. I went to my friend's house today and it seemed much quieter when I arrived there than when I got home after my 45 minute drive.

If its anything like the Ecotec 2.0T engine, its just the high pressure fuel pump needed for DI. I had a Sky Redline and at startup it would click rapidly. Once it warmed up, it would click about twice a second. I remember the first time I noticed it...it freaked me out a ton!

You know I could have sworn I read that it utilizes port-injection at lower revs and when the engine reaches the higher rev-range that's when the direct-injection kicks in. So I was under the impression that direct-injection wouldn't be audible in neutral and low rev situations?
As I said though, as I usually am, I could be totally wrong here. |

My salesman assures me that the guy who filled up my far was a motoring enthusiast and would absolutely put in the needed premium. I never fully believed this.

Does it sound like this?
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3sycuN_keA"]FA20 (BRZ) boxer motor tapping - YouTube[/ame] Sorry for wind noise...Everything else is normal. That was a GBS Limited at idle, iPhone vid taken right above the driver's side fender where it meets the hood. I've read that Subies are known for that tapping, but I haven't come across any tapping from the turbocharged variants. |

I have similar sound as well. Another thing I have notice is when the AC kicks in the belt tensioner will start to vibrate.

My Subarus have always been noisy. The BRZ is even noisier. BUt that's due to the direct injectors which have to deal with fuel at 1,740psi. I do get a shirping noise from the driver's side of the engine. I'm not sure if it's normal or not. Other people have mentioned it, so I think it's normal.
The dealership is going to replace some trim inside the car that was scratched at delivery. When I drop it off, hopefully the chirping will happen and I can point it out tot he service manager. |
