Starting to get worried - Engine noise

I heard my engine ticking the first day I got my car at idle and my friends and I disregarded it as direct injection noises.

Today I swear it sounded louder. Especially when it was cold. Still just normal direct injection noises? Because I could still hear it easily when I got home from work (15 mile, 45 minute commute).

I can post a video if needed.

I've heard the DI is loud, but also there are reports of dealers not putting good gas in the car

Subaru boxers are loud. I wouldn't worry about anything unless you are using excessive oil or can hear audible knock in the cabin. My engine sounds horrid.

I'm quite familiar with Subaru's usual boxer engines but this whole DI thing is what's leaving me confused. But I can't hear anything in the cabin yet so...maybe I'm good?

I feel like a parent with a week old baby that just sneezed and now think that she must be horribly, horribly sick.

I would think so. Mine also makes extra noise compared with my EJ25.

Noticed the same thing when showing the car off and opened the hood. Not worried about it, but will check it again when I finish the 1000 mile "break in" (got in 772 this weekend)

don't break a sweat, its the noise of the direct injection system

Gaen 06-04-2012 07:28 PM

although you said its from the engine could it also be this?

"Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound
coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel
evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction."

Forunately, the turbo'd FA20 for the next wrx uses subarus own DI system, not toyo

Take a listen to the IS or new GS engine and see if the sound is the same/similar.

I'm @ 265 miles and mine does the audible clicking as well, the technician who PDI'd my car also filled it up with 87 (smooth move). Definitely noticing a little more cooperation and smoothness now that the tank is mostly 93 V-power.

Im not going try to assume to absolutely know what that noise is. But OP what you need to do is find out for yourself. Heres what you should do, get a stethoscope with a hollow needle attachment..or you could get one at your local parts store like this one.

http://tradetools.co.nz/products/3037020

The reason why im telling you to do this is because that noise could be MANY things or a combination of things. But to pin-point where that noise is coming from you should precision listen instead of diagnosing the sound on general knowledge and make a hypothesis based on assumptions.

Lifters, valves, tensioners, injectors, direct injectors, pullies, etc.. can all make similar sounds at all different unorthodox patterns.

while the tick will always be audible in your search using the stethoscope, there will be one spot where that tick will be the loudest. Note it and get back to us.

totally normal...

this motor sounds like it's almost knocking at idle, haha.
