If you want to do it, go for it! I think it would be a really cool project, and could turn out really well. Would I do it, no. Will it take such a huge amount of time, parts, and experience that you could almost buy another car for it, yes. But hey, if you can, and really, REALLY want it, go for it. It is your car after all. Not mine or anyone elses |

I work on crazy stuff like this all the time. And it definitely can be done... but not for cheap. you will have to get a new bracket and run dual alternators. A pack of 2 semi-truck batteries (add around 150lbs just batteries) then pick a motor with an off neutral. (it's clutched like an a/c condenser to free spin when off) weld up a metal rod and a gear into a modified differential. Then the wiring mess will go under way. I'm not sure how it all wires up I have a person I go to for all of that. You probably wouldn't have a back seat anymore and the car would gain about 300lbs. In parts you are probably at around $2,500 (shooting from the hip). It would be a really fun project but not practical. The diff mods to gear it in without smoking the trans would probably be the hardest part.

I just read you idea for how to work it and I got this crazy idea with motorcycle chains and sprockets welded to the axles but the only issue is the suspension and keeping tension on the chain. I was thinking more one centrally mounted motor over the diff that was clutched or able to disengage the drive shaft and have it wired to the pedal like a drive by wire system. I would have to scratch my head, drink a six pack, and tear one apart before I could even begin to figure out how to make it all work. But if there's a beer there's a way. I just finished shoving a 1000cc motorcycle engine in a lawnmower for a burn out competition. I like figuring out the stuff that just makes people look at it and go "why in the hell would you do that?"

no one (besides me & a few others) seems to support this kind of behavior though, unfortunately.

If you have to ask "what kind of work would it take", you are not up to it. The End.

Its doable. Firstly I‘d suggest you develope the controller software and associated CANBUS sensors and actuators to engage, disengage and monitor motor speed to work with revised VSA, ABS, etc.
Then perhaps use the extensive KERS motor tech. Significant changes to the electrical system. You will need to reengineer the suspension and the rear subframe and floor/trunk compartment. Brakes will need to change as well. Might be easier and better results to start with a clean slate rather than fitting a square peg in a round hole creating poor handling. Just buy a 2017 Supra. LOL

You know that motorcycles have the same problem right? Chain tensioners yo, combined with the stiffer suspensions required for the added weight there will likely be less suspension travel to account for. Check out some dirtbikes for an idea on how they pull it off as they generally have at least 3" of travel.
