When my car was hit by a wheel on the freeway, I had exhaust, work wheels, Toyota emblems and clear side markers on it. Luckily the damage was cosmetic and my insurance has covered it completely. I had the car for 3 weeks and was returning from the dealer who had installed my license plates 10 minutes before the incident. This was 2 weeks ago (June 11th) and my car goes into the shop on July 10th. They estimated it would take a week so I'll get my car back on July 18th. It sucks driving around with a new car that looks like it has a black eye. This has also pushed back my timetable for installing coil overs, rear control arms and getting it tinted.
As much as a hassle as this has been with paperwork, insurance, police reports and estimates, the car can be fixed but my head cannot. I count my blessings because half a second quicker and the wheel could have gone through my windshield instead of smashing my hood/fender/headlight/bumper. To the OP: glad you weren't hurt; the car can be fixed. good luck! |

They are all RWD also! Coincidence? Ancient Astronaut Theorists believe it isn't! I would say its people not knowing how to handle RWD in the accidents caused by the driver of the car.

Whether someone wants, doesn't want, can afford or can't afford to mod their cars has nothing to do with their driving skills. I think you will find the crowd of people (young) that Toyota aimed this car at is the problem. It's sort of like giving someone a Superman suit and then they think they can stop a train.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe everyone is blowing this thread out of proportion. I believe the OP was just making an observation rather than blaming the actual accident on cars being stock.

A series 10 spontaneously coming into existence in the wing box caused the flight 800 crash.
Caused the delivery delays too. #86 couldn't be found where they put it last.

Maybe that's because statistically most 86s are kept stock?

Another one bit the dust today. Came across a Hot Lava FR-S in a ditch on a commonly used windy road. Bad damage, including subframe damage front and rear. No injuries. No pictures as I was on scene helping and it didn't seem appropriate.
He said he swerved to avoid a deer (daylight, dry conditions), and lost control. From looking at the tire marks, the back end stepped out after his first avoidance maneuver, he tried to bring it back around but over corrected, and it swung back the other way eventually doing a 180 and sending him off the road backwards, into the ditch and a ranchers fence (no damage to the fence). He said he was driving with all the driver aids off. Got the feeling he was a member of the "nannies are for pussies" crowd. I politely informed him that in this instance he could have avoided the loss of control, or at least gone off the roadway in a much more controllable manner, had the driver aids been left active. He agreed. In keeping with the theme of this thread, the car was completely stock, prius tires and all. Nice guy, had ran into him before. He was the owner of the only other FR-S in my area. Pretty sure his car will be in the shop for awhile, and will never drive the same again. Pity. |

Mine is the only one in the area, and it's bone stock. So if the crazy haired guy from Ancient Aliens is correct, I had better hurry and get the CAI and exhaust system immediately or I'm guaranteed to crash! I think one of the factors is that the FR-S/BRZ is the first rear wheel drive car a lot of these people have driven and it catches them when they overestimate their abilities.

I think the real reason is that the BRZ owners are secretly out to get us.

Pretty much. Bottom line is that most cars remain relatively stock through their useful life, or until they fall enough in price that they are used as "donor bodies" for builds.
There is always going to be a higher percentage of modded cars on a car enthusiast forum than in real life, so our view of the world here is skewed. Even with that, I'm willing to bet that over 50% of the cars represented on this forum would appear stock when you look at them in a photo. Also, it would depend on what you mean by modded. I consider mine stock even though I have made some minor changes to it from the way it was delivered to me.
