Make sure you wet sand and put that clear coat on or get it cleared professionally. Just look through the thread there are a few really good looking ones that are glossy. If you want to save labor im sure some shops offer it but at a higher price of course but quality would be up there.

I just bought spray max 2k for the clear coat.

For wetsanding, is 2000 grit enough? Do I need rougher or finer?

Yes, 2000 is good. Make it look foggy and spray.

My paint shop color sanded mine when all was said and done

Your tails look amazing. That is the finish I would like to achieve.

Lol at the smoking finish, I don't wanna get hassled by cops everyday.

Edit: Nvm I think I've found my answer.

Here is what I'm gonna do:

1. Clean taillights
2. 2/3 layers light coats with Duplicolor metalcast
3. Wetsand with 2000 grit
4. 4-5 layers heavy clear coats with Spray max 2k
5. Wetsand with 2000 grit to remove orange peel
6. Buff it with polisher compound
7. Wax it.

Please advise.

Will these steps be better?
1. Clean taillights
2. 2 layers light coats with Duplicolor metalcast
3. Wetsand with 2000 grit
4. 2 layers light coat with Duplicolor metalcast
5. Wetsand with 2000 grit
6. 4-5 layers heavy clear coats with Spray max 2k
7. Wetsand with 2000 grit to remove orange peel
8. Buff it with polisher compound
9. Wax it.

Please educate me!
The 2000 is to get the paint to stick. Just prep. You are sanding the clear lights until they look a little foggy. Make sure it is uniform and all over (even edges), then spray. The final product will be clear. When the color is done take it to a body shop. In all honesty you won't even have to color sand for it to look good (or at least mine didn't really need to be) but my shop did it anyway.

Very nice.. Looking to do mine.. Is the duplicolor easy to come off like the vht if you want to go back to clear stock? Not that I would like to go back stock.. All red is nice..

Sorry, just saw this guys. I paid $80, but he burned through the paint sanding, re-did it and once again, he burned through the paint. I offered to pay him another $60 because I could tell he was getting annoyed. This time, he let me do 100% of it at his shop and helped me as well as didn't need to sand because the paint was all fresh. I had to sand most of the old clear and red off and start over again. It was worth every penny and was still cheaper than TOM's (Only other lights I would consider)

You can probably talk a shop into doing it for around $100....Just make sure they don't sand the paint. There are so many sharp edges, it is super easy to burn through even sanding lightly.

No, this is permanent. I had to sand the lights for the paint (2000 grit). I suppose I could just sand the paint and re-clear and make them look stock, but it would probably be a lot less trouble to buy a used stock pair. With all of them coming off for aftermarket lights, I imagine the price of them is going to start going down a lot!

I don't know I hate Tom's ones. I used to like it, but they turned out to be ugly. I still prefer Valenti's smoked tails, but I'm sure I'll get hassled by cops almost every day.
