I agree with you, people are just ignorant and refuse to think otherwise. They think it's just a simple mod that can be done to swap things out. Guess what people, I've been modding cars for awhile now, it's not as easy as you think it is.

Modding a car wouldn't be easy, but direct swap is pretty easy( for me I think), unless it involves painting( pain in the butt).

LSxJunkie's article post sums up all you need to know. I made an honest attempt at trying to import a RHD BEAMS MR2. Called up several agencies like D.O.T. and one in Washington, DC. My conversations stopped when I found the the body that does crash tests for qualification. They emailed me a long spreadsheet of cars that have been legalized through this process which includes the R32. My next step at that point was to start an interest group of MR2 enthusiasts to pool together money to purchase and import (I think it was) 10 JDM MR2s for this legal body to do testing. I lost all motivation at that point and started searching for R32s already in the US lol
Plus I read it's not that safe/more difficult to drive RHD on public US roads. Left turns are horrendous, opposite headlight angles at night, etc.

you can register any JDM car as a "Kit Car" at DMV in your states. Just make sure the car you are bringing in from Japan is completely disassembled before shipping, meaning everything on the car is completely off the chassis, including engine, transmission, front/rear bumpers, panels, doors, seats, consoles, EVERYTHING!!
Then go wait in line to get these car registered as kit cars will take awhile too. It requires a lot of research and patience

I sat here for way too long with an enlarge pic of each car on my two monitors. There is NO DIFFERENCE between the front bumpers with the exception of the headlight washer (for obvious reasons), The only differences are things like the clear turn signals the foglights (which should be an option) and the headlights (also an option)
That being said...which they are "essentially" the same car, I'd much rather have the gt86, its a significaly nicer interior from the hvac and heated seats to the little chrome accents,. and while the accents are really small parts they really make the difference in the feel of the interior. That said I'll probably pay the car off asap then start working on importing the things that I want. [PS] I couldn't give to ****s about JDM this or JDM that, actually I avoid them just because I hate how people obsesses over stupidness like the red in the 86 logo...really who will notice that. That said, somethings are actually better (like the hvac unit) and I want them for that.

There are a TON of those cars in the US, but none are legal. They will be state registered vehicles. The federal government CAN take them and crush them if they want. However they only go after high value target vehicles like the Skyline. Even importing a car from Canada (which since the 90s have been identical to safety/emissions standards in the US) requires a letter of compliance from the manufacturer, but that's about it. Edit: I should finish reading the threads first, LSX already clarified this stuff.

Funny thing. In Japan, people are going crazy about not getting FR-S and instead getting just 86. Heck, some of them are saying Toyota should sell FR-S under Lexus brand. Selling a Scion product under Lexus brand???
![]() I am sure in Europe and other markets where they get GT86, they are also talking about why they do not get FR-S and only choice is GT86. |
