My other car (GT3076R turbo'd) does have an inline filter, but it is in addition to the "sock". Without the sock your intank pump is sucking fuel through it unfiltered. That doesn't seem advisable.

Have you found anything else throughout the fuel system that shows signs of wear or deterioration?
I mean if its just the filter thats being disintegrated, finding an optimum replacement doesn't seem like that big of a deal, unless i'm completely seeing this in the wrong context. |

The carrier that holds the pump is a "sealed" unit with a non-replaceable filter inside it. It looks like they had to cut that apart to get at the filter to check it.
Our fuel pump upgrades for the other Subaru models had an option for a new carrier unit for that reason, so you could put a fresh secondary filter in at the same time as replacing the fuel pump. |

Hell, this is VERY welcome news. I've been running e-85 for the past 5k miles. Time to run her dry and give my sump a look.
