No, it's not normal. It's one of two things. Either you're shifting into first before you've given your clutch adequate time to do its job or you have a problem that should be taken to your dealership.

If he's letting the clutch out in neutral (which I assume he is, why else go into neutral?) a small clunk is normal.

When in neutral with the clutch out and then pushing in the clutch and shifting into first gear, a clunk is not normal, at least it isn't in my car. I've never (key word never) had that happen with my car in over 9,000 miles. Either he's shifting into first too soon after pushing in the clutch or there's something wrong.

IF your sitting in nuetral, clutch out and shove the clutch in and move to first swiftly then it will "clunk/thunk" My car does, almost every manual in existence does it to a greater or lesser extent.

If you make that transition slowly then it won't. either way it really doesn't matter, beyond some minor wear on the 1st gear syncro.

It's normal for a RWD car. My S2000 would do it as well. My Integra never has, b/c it's FWD and has no driveshaft.

O.K. Perhaps I've never had a problem because I learned a long time ago not to move to first gear swiftly!!

As I've stated in previous postings, you have to give the clutch enough time to do it's job.

The noise and thump is easy to explain.

When your car is standing still and you go from neutral to first, your input shaft/clutch disc coming to an abrupt stop when you engage first. The thing that brings it to an abrupt stop is your output shaft which is connected to the driveshaft/rear wheels.

If you want about a second, it's enough for the fluid/friction to slow down the input shaft before engaging thus, you don't hear it.

It's more obvious in a RWD because it has more play (FWD dont have a driveshaft obviously.

Having a drive shaft has absolutely nothing to do with it. When in neutral the driveshaft doesn't spin, if it did the car would move. It probably has more to do with the greater mass within the clutch/input shaft assembly.

Also: the method of engine/trans mounting in fwd vs. Rwd probably makes a difference as well.

Edit 2: the extra play associated with have an extra link (aka driveshaft) make sense, if that's what you meant wolf I apologize.

It's what I meant, but I stated it in a fairly sloppy manner, haha.
