That can fool the airbag sensor into thinking there is someone there and it will beep to tell you to buckle your seat belt. That's probably what you heard.
Unless his phone weighs about 40lbs... It was most likely something else he heard...

Well..my phone's got the NFC sensor so it *might* have probably triggered the weight sensor somehow. But I always put it on the passenger seat, why did it only beeped once at exactly 1001th mile?

Or it doesn't go by weight. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7410

Taken from that thread,
Quote:
Its not a weight sensor - its a new technology that utilizes an electrical capacitance based sensor. It uses electrical capacitance to measure the body mass of an individual sitting there. Hence electronic devices that transmit like cell phones may give false readings.

Weird that was the first time. But it was more then likely the culprit.

It does go by weight.. That tells the air bag how to deploy if there is a child in the seat.. There is a capacitance sensor for the passenger seatbelt warning that is what is causing the beeping.. Sounds like the phones are setting off that sensor .. Kinda like tin foil in a microwave..

I set 45 pounds of cat litter in plastic bottles on the passenger seat this morning, and it didnt register as having anything on the seat at all. But throw a phone face down on the seat and it goes crazy. The zipper from my jacket also sets off the seat.

I got grand kids and booster seats.. So I am aware of this stuff.. Have also used the latch system for the rearward facing child seat. Thankfully no need to use latch in this car.. My back hurts just thinking about it.. Thanks for taking the time to prove this..

Thanks for proving that it doesn't go by weight.

The thought that some of you actually drove 1000 miles without hitting redline is just mind boggling.
As for the seat, my cell phone sets off the sensor EVERY time. Rather annoying really.
